Yeah, most definitely. There has been a number of heavier characters in Disney movies, but they'd probably go for a lesbain main over a fat one if only because they can make more money with it. Romance always sells better than image, I'll wager.

I don't know, wouldn't the panicked screaming from the conservative lobby be harder for Disney to deal with than a simple "you're beautiful the way you are" plot with a size 14 princess?

1) Eh. There's always been far less fuss about attractive lesbian characters by bigots, for creepy sexualizing reasons. If it was two gay men, then yeah.

2) Disney will also be considering the expense and profit of merch with a size 14 princess and probably thinking that it'll lose them money.

Yeah, no, the bigots definitely still scream just as loud about lesbians in children's programming, I don't know where you're getting that.

ayrt

I assume most complaints are by angry parents who like to monitor every ins an outs of their child's live. I imagine it they did have a lesbian princess they would do in in a way where it could be written off as 'they're just really close friends' by some people. Also there would huge backlash to the people being complaining because there's no way to defend not wanting a gay princess in a way that isn't homophobic. With a fat princess they could try to hide behind the excuse of 'encouraging an unhealthy lifestyle'... It doesn't make it true but it does create a barrier of fault that disney wouldn't want targeted at them.
The 'you're beautiful the way you are' plot has been done before, just not in this way. So while we all know how much disney loves to rebrand the same thing over and over again, I don't think they'd put themselves in a possible line of fire just to sell the same lines they've been preaching for years now. At least with a lesbian princess they can get some brownie point for it.

And if/when they do have a lesbian main princess, there will be a circlejerk on F!S about how they're "pandering" and don't deserve any points, even though right now we're all calling them cowards for only having background/Word of God/subtext gay characters.

Don't limit it to F!S, people love throwing disney under the bus wherever you go.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thrown under the bus might not be the phrase you're looking for.

In any case Disney is kind of one of thos companies that deserves to be criticized from a myriad of angles.

NAYRT: I have a Disney + subscription, I'm entitled to point out that their movie releases are falling short when it comes to LGBTQ diversity. And they're a multi-billion dollar company who doesn't care about what a single subscriber puts on their blog anyway.

Disney wants to get wants to get cookies from the LGBTQ fandom for the minimal effort of letting their talent talk ships on the interview circuit. Meanwhile, CN is doing it better (Steven Universe and Adventure Time), Wonderstorm is doing it better (Dragon Prince), Disney TV is doing it better (Star), DreamWorks is doing it better (She-Ra).

Why give Disney credit because their talent ships it on twitter?
