Probably.

My guess? They might consider Moana their token "fat" princess.

I hate that you're probably right.

So do I. :(

(I suppose you could count Princess Fiona in Shrek? though there's certainly some body dysmorphia themes there.)

(Dur, I guess DreamWorks doesn't count as Disney.)

+1, so they can say "See! See! We have a variety of body types! Now shut up!"

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Cool strawman, but if they did, they would have said so. We all know they love that PR, right? This very thread shows that everyone knows Disney loves to talk about their minimal representation, so why haven't they done it with Moana if they consider her their "fat" princess?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I mean you're right, but that's not what strawman means at all.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If Disney ever makes a fat princess, she will be thin by the end of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be a good thing. Being overweight or obese is not healthy.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
God, shut up.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
You’re being a dick and also being overweight can actually help some conditions/people.

You’re right but I’ll bet you the first lesbian princess will be a background character and she’ll have one line saying she’s a lesbian. Then they’ll change it in the Chinese dub.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, she'll have one line that has nothing to do with her being a lesbian, but in a background shot she'll be holding another girl's hand if you pause at the right time.

I don't really care about a character's sexual orientation or body habitus. I only care about whether they are interesting or well written.

... agreed, but I assume you also acknowledge that seeing heroes that you can identify with (especially if you are not a cis slender straight white male) is something valuable for children?

Good for you?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, Disney makes a point out of making sure that almost every character gets a heterosexual relationship, no matter how implausible.

Yeah, most definitely. There has been a number of heavier characters in Disney movies, but they'd probably go for a lesbain main over a fat one if only because they can make more money with it. Romance always sells better than image, I'll wager.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, wouldn't the panicked screaming from the conservative lobby be harder for Disney to deal with than a simple "you're beautiful the way you are" plot with a size 14 princess?

And if/when they do have a lesbian main princess, there will be a circlejerk on F!S about how they're "pandering" and don't deserve any points, even though right now we're all calling them cowards for only having background/Word of God/subtext gay characters.

I agree, and I'm neither lesbian nor fat.
There will also never be a wish fulfillment movie- Disney or otherwise- for a girl or woman who's considered facially unattractive that gets the attractive guy. (Amy Schumer films and the movie Baby Cakes doesn't count.)
The whole butterface, shlumpy dude gets attractive girl next door will go on forever, sadly. :(

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Really it's not very common anymore at all. The unattractive guy thing.

I think our culture needs to stop waiting for Disney to validate our existences.
