I didn't play KH3... can someone translate this secret?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nomura was kicked off FFXV/Versus and it was handed to Tabata. Tabata ruined FFXV and it’s a goddamn mess and nomura is rightfully pissed about it. Nomura decides to pull a “I’ll make my own FFXV/Versus with blackjack and hookers” in kingdom hearts. FFXV fans mad Square is siding with Nomura while conveniently ignoring Tabata’s colossal mishandling of FFXV cost square quite a bit of money and ended up with him getting fired, meanwhile Nomura prints money.

NAYRT

Yeaaah. As someone who LIKES FFXV the whole thing was a huge goddamn mess and the KHIII thing was frustrating, even though I like both games.

(I know the plot is absolute garbage in XV and the girls deserved better but dammit the boyos are good boyos.)

The trainwreck of the development cycle of FFXV is more entertaining than the game itself tbh. I almost feel like the mishandling will be taught in the future of what not to do.

ngl one of my fav. things to do is just to squint at the background politics in game. because they're a HOT MESS of absolute nonsense and it's hilarious to me.

I mean, the whole Tenebrae situation is just weird af anyway? The Nifs have been occupying it for hundreds of years but they don't want to take the popularity ding that it'd take to just subsume the royal family/home until they try to kill Regis and Noct and DO kill Luna/Ravus' mom?

And after that it's totes fine so long as Luna's still the Oracle?

What even?

If _I_ were an evil empire hellbent on ruling the world I'd have taken over the kingdom hundreds of years ago, kept the oracle as a figurehead/healer but stripped of actual political power and just washed my hands of the whole ~ruling family of Tenebrae~ ages ago.

And then how the death of the Queen of Tenebrae is covered up with claims of ~accidental fire~ when King Regis and Prince Noctis were there and knew the truth and just let the evil Nifs tell the 'accident' story.

And then it's even better when you look at a map and go 'ah, yes, King Regis decided to take his injured and only heir of a child to this allied country across an ocean... when this allied country is a) occupied by the Nifs and b) just a puppet country in the first place'. GOOD CALL, REGIS. That was an easily predictable thing the Nifs would do! Why wouldn't they attack while you were making yourself a GODDAMN TARGET LIKE A FOOL.

The whole wall around the city of Insomnia both intrigues me (because I see how it came about) and infuriates me because there's obviously tensions between those who are Lucian but not Insomnian and those who are native to Insomnia and there's a big tech and quality of life divide and that coupled with Regis' plan to just give up in order to protect his son just...

I think Regis is a terrible king, is what I'm saying. And rather incredibly stupid. INCREDIBLY stupid. But the plot itself, when it comes to Tenebrae is just a disaster all around.

i played through 15 twice and i still have no idea what the point of the game was besides to marry luna who i have no idea why she’s important outside of noctis has to marry her because Reasons.

i can make more sense of 13’s story and 90% of that plot is in a data book i never bothered to read.

I'm still confused.

So Nomura started on FF15 but the project was given to Tabata. What do you mean Tabata ruined it? Like, you weren't happy with the direction it ended up taking? And then Nomura, within KH3... featured the FF15 characters or something but in a totally different way? And meanwhile Tabata was fired and FF15 is a financial failure?

Sorry, this is all new to me. I didn't play 15 but I'm old enough to remember when it was supposed to be part of 13, but production got dragged out for so long it became it's own game.

They're just mad. XV did good numbers.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
FF15 didn’t fail, but they cancelled DLC cause he quit so the game is just now officially incomplete forever. and tabata radically changed the direction of Versus. So in short it’s -

ff15 is a game featuring characters and designs from versus but no resemblance to its initial conception/plot

kh3 yozura stuff is probably versus plot kh-ified without the original characters/setting so he had to make a bunch of replacements (although this is a guess since, well, it doesn’t exist yet)

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
He ruined it because it was handled badly.

Both in a storyline way and a development way. The storyline was ... poor, especially in a long line of rich Final Fantasy games, the characters were interesting in the moment but bad virtually no backgrounds and history, which is a major step down for the Final Fantasy series. They were paper thin outside of the immediate situations they were in. Noct had a father, but absent mother. Gladio and his sister had a father which was only alluded to in Gladio's DLC, and any loss was ignored entirely during the normal game. Ignis had no mention of parents at all, and ... Prompto's family backstory was dubiously canon and only explained in a slightly weird anime prequel, otherwise was ignored. The game required an expansion in order to explain a lot of the world-based stuff because it just wasn't included in the first place and you could see that it was both Final Fantasy XIII's series with the serial numbers filed off (Ardyn is basically the same character as Caius, let's face it) AND that Tabata was clearly working from two conflicting sets of notes during the production (the original Regis-era team was inconsistent at various points in the game and seemed to switch randomly between Cor being present and Weskham being present, depending on what point we look at!). It's also obvious that originally certain characters were intended to be evil in the end and this was changed late enough in the game for pictures of these characters to be used in the strategy guide. There are like, three distinctly different version of Gladio's father, for example.

It didn't help that the game started out open and then closed off to rails, the very opposite of a winning formula, required watching a beautiful but intensely boring movie in order to understand the immediate backstory and the fact that the DLC, which took WAY too long to be released in the life of a reasonably simple RPG, didn't seem to mesh whatsoever with the information we'd already been given. Prompto's made no sense. Gladio's was just a fighty aside to ham-handed explain his scars. Ignis's was a pared down version of Assassin's Creed Syndicate for no real reason and even a major element of development for his character didn't make sense, because a line of dialogue from him references the movie... which... he wasn't present for and couldn't have known about.

It was, in short, an absolute shitshow.

It's fine at the time, when you play it, honestly. But the further away you get, the more you can see the holes in the tapestry and the myriad fuck-ups made by Tabata and his team. The fact that it ended up absolutely NOTHING like the original trailer and the fact that it had been forcibly removed from the Final Fantasy XIII universe/background was seriously obvious didn't help it. The Etro imagery is still visible in certain scenes, the assets are re-used in things like playing cards, it's clear god names have been changed to omit the Bhunivelze/Etro/Pulse/Lindzei type stuff that was originally intended and replaced with the usual summon names just to cover the old association up.

Final Fantasy XV has some good character interaction. It's got some of the best character-to-character banter and conversation of anything I've ever seen not put out by Rockstar. It's pretty, too. But alas, it was flat. It doesn't live up to the series legacy. Last Remnant felt like more of a Final Fantasy than FFXV.

And the financial decisions were ... bad. The game itself did okay, but the promotion was poor. They released a movie that was practically Required Reading for understanding it, and even if you forewent it for the game itself, if you bothered with the Comrades DLC it was necessary, or you were left very confused. They took upwards of a YEAR to release the DLC, even for people with the Season Pass (which was released at the same time as the game, in November..? I think? with the first part of the DLC coming out in MARCH) and the online multiplayer ended up being just battle-based instead of team-based exploration like people wanted, which led to it being empty and devoid of people very quickly. Not to mention the OBNOXIOUSLY long loading times.

Then they released it to the PC, with extras, ignored all the console fans while giving shitloads of new content to the PC gamers, and the expanded version the PC got, while also released on console, came with the DLC packet attached and extra bits, which people who already had the game, and had paid separate for the DLC for ... had to literally buy. It wasn't even given as a goodwill gesture to loyal early players, we had to buy the additional shit separately if we wanted it. Which is horseshit, honestly. To break it down, early players paid full price for the game and the full price of the DLC pass (say... £55 and £25), got made to wait over a year for all the DLC we'd paid for, and then they released all that, plus extras, and the DLC, to new players for a cheaper price (£35, iirc) and made us pay extra if we wanted the add-ons, despite fucking us around for a year (£12).

Then they took a random vote for what additional DLC we wanted after finally releasing all of it, decided for some reason to have Ardyn, Aranea (side character), Luna (who literally had all the interesting development in the aforementioned movie) and Noctis who ... HAD THE ENTIRE GAME.

Then the second DLCs got canned, except Ardyn's which was already in development, and Tabata got fired because ... well. I think you can guess.

The game ended up losing a lot of money.

I can see why Nomura wants to take back his generic hero design and re-purpose him for Kingdom Hearts, especially since the original trailers for FF Versus XIII were supposed to be considerably darker than a buddy-based road trip and people turning into Heartless, uh, Daemons, because of Geostigma ... I mean, sorry, Starscourge.

Sorry, this got long. I have Feelings.

Agreed 100%. I enjoyed the game for what it was and I loved the characters and their interactions, but it was an incomplete, cobbled-together mess and it showed.

The Honest Trailer for FFXV is SO on point, you should watch it it you haven't already.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I presume you're the same person that ALWAYS rags on FFXV whenever this comes up, and like?? I don't know what you're talking about?? FFXV sold over 8.9 million copies, which literally means it outsold every other FF save for XIV's latest expansion (and that's only bc XIV is an MMO). The project was given to Tabata because Nomura had produced nothing on VsXIII in over a decade-- which, I mean, of course? He was putting all of his resources into KH3 at the time. Tabata did what he could with what he was given and produced a well-received, if imperfect game. It's not fair to call FFXV "a goddamned mess" when literally every single Final Fantasy is rough around the edges and imperfect.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Nomura has produced nothing because again, Square kept throwing shit at him and SCRAPPING whatever work he did. KH3 took so long to get off the ground because they literally decided to SCRAP the engine it was being worked on a few years in. AND then they had to wait for approval on Disney who needed to give them the literal assets from their movies. AND then they threw Nomura on FFVIIR. So yeah no fucking shit he had no work done on Versus. Because Square mismanaged the fuck out of him, which they’ve been doing since 13.

I didn’t say FFXV sold bad. What happened is they gave Tabata a studio and the man up and quits and costs Square 33 MILLION and decided to take his ball home with him and OVER STREAM. No shit Square is gonna be mad at the person who does that when less than a few months later Nomura shits out KH3 and sells like hot cakes to recoup that loss.

And yes, FFXV is a “goddamn mess” the game had to be patched REPEATEDLY to make sense of the story, no one really could make sense of the plot, basic combat needed to be patched in, not to mention the paid DLC to fill in important plot stuff. And that’s not a bag on Tabata. That’s a bag on Square for mismanaging the game so badly they decided to Frankenstein it together from barebones notes in the span of a few years. To deny the development cycle of FFVX as being a mess is ignorant as fuck compared to how streamlined Kitase/Sakaguchi directed FFs are.

Hell, even FFXIV (which is an MMO rather than a single-player game) has a much better/more coherent story than XV does, and the dev team had to basically completely reinvent that game after its initial failure.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure other Final Fantasy games have sold more than 8.9 million copies. I mean, VII sold 11 Million. The only reason FFXV sold so many was because it got a PC release at a later date. That always shores up numbers, because console games have the capacity to buy it again if they also use the PC, as well as it pulling in pure PC gamers.

FFXV was a goddamn mess, though. And I say this as a fan of it. I enjoyed it at the time and spent a tremendous amount of time on it, even got platinum on it. But it was a mess. The amount of patches and improvements that constantly had to be released were way worse than any of the other games. Sure, so the 1/35 soldier minigame wasn't finished, but that's nothing compared to some of the glaring omissions and crossed wires in FFXV.

Again, I really liked it. It remains one of my main fandoms and a game I go back to. But it's perfectly acceptable for people to rag on it, because it's more than just imperfect. It was a complete clusterfuck, from release to Episode Ardyn.

Yeah like.... I liked paying it but it was a mess. A big one.
