This is a mindset I don't get. Even if a character does the worst thing ever, if they also went through the worst thing ever first I can sympathize with them. I might also hate them, but that doesn't preclude me sympathizing with them.

Harsh, but true. I guess the old saying that nobody stays dead in comic books aside from Jason Todd was more wishful thinking anything. (too bad it didn't stay that way...)
Still, I'll say being brutally murdered isn't the best way to deal with an annoying kid.

I thought that saying was about Uncle Ben.

It was about both, I thought, at least until Jason got revived. It originated with Uncle Ben I think, and Jason got tagged along sometime after... Something like that. I just remember seeing people use it with Jason at some point.

It used to be Bucky, Jason and Uncle Ben. Then Bucky came back, so it went to Jason and Uncle Ben. Then Jason came back. And well, we're just waiting for Ben to come back because why not?
