I disagree with this secret so much. I get finding some villains sympathetic, but not the Joker, ever.

Not in any conceivable incarnation?

I don't like the versions that change the character to make him sympathetic. I think it changes what the character is about and weakens him. The Joker should be an unsympathetic force of chaos. That's what makes him a great villain character. Giving him a backstory makes him less interesting as a villain to me.

+1

Absolutely this. I like the Joker and I think it's completely a disservice to his character to change him that way.

I agree with you. I don't like the Joker at all as a character, either, but he's especially repugnant when the writer tries to make me empathize with him.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Just want to join in on the chorus shouting YES. The point is that he is chaos and chaos isn't sympathetic. It doesn't want or care beyond the present.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
What could possibly be sympathetic about him?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Read ‘Going Sane’.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
You must know nothing about the Joker then,

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think you are the one who doesn’t know much about Joker. There are numerous stories where’s he shown to be tragic or sympathetic.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Right, I'm sure you believe that too. Joker isn't supposed to have a backstory, and most of the recent movies are just trying to profit off his popularity without actually understanding what his character is, or who he's meant to be.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
You are aware that the most famous Joker story is his backstory right? And this was written decades ago?

I can’t sympathize with him after he crippled Babs or shot Sarah Essen Gordon in the head

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is a mindset I don't get. Even if a character does the worst thing ever, if they also went through the worst thing ever first I can sympathize with them. I might also hate them, but that doesn't preclude me sympathizing with them.

Not bludgeoning Jason to death though?

He was super annoying back then. The fans could have saved him and chose not to.

The Joker doesn't have a human side. He's an over-the-top violent horror show that exists only to present evil as a force of colourful elemental chaos. Adapting him into a person who can be empathized with is entirely missing the point.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I'm not going to waste sympathy or empathy on someone who would most likely kill me for them. In many incarnations, specifically to prove to me that there's no point to them. I'm going to be practical and skip over that whole lesson and agree with him that he doesn't deserve any.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I only lowkey felt sorry for him in the Lego Batman Movie and that was mainly because he was a Lego.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I find the versions that try to humanise him intensely boring.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT There's plenty of other sympathetic villains out there! Why take the most interesting parts of the Joker and tediously explain them?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I have read many comics and i find him to be able to be a very sympathetic character. Depends what medium but some of his versions are so sympathetic tell tale omg so good and i thought the joker movie was awesome

Ever play arkham city?
