This is how I feel about Boba (and Jango) Fett. They were never that badass to me, and their anti-climatic deaths seemed well-suited to such over-rated characters.

Are you old enough to remember pre-prequels OP? I'm only asking because I was 13 with a few years of Star Wars watching under my belt. when TPM was released and ever since then I've had trouble seeing Anakin and Vader as the same character. But it's not because of the annoying kid/angsty adult angle. It's just that the prequels didn't really sell the transformation to me and I think, despite the fact you can handwave it with the mechanical argument, the voice and general way of phrasing things is just SO different. I think my brain just can't accept it.

I can't see him as a badass villain because I always thought the helmet and everything looked just plain silly.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Even as a kid, I thought he was ridiculous and robotic and basically a joke of a villain.

Well.

Having watched the original trilogy, along with a couple of television follow-ups, read a couple of extended universe books, watched the prequel trilogy, and watched almost nothing of new stuff (except The Mandolorian clips), my headcanon is that the original trilogy happened, the prequel trilogy is a sad attempt at propaganda, Luke is alternately with or fighting Mara Jade, Han and Leia have twins, and Baby Yoda exists because cute.

Anakin is considered creepy now?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
There's no formal defining body for any of this stuff, but, I mean, he's pretty fucking creepy. This isn't a weird opinion to me ( it OP to be clear)

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
How is he creepy?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there is that one scene where he's screaming about how he murdered all the sand people

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
This surprised me, but apparently a lot of people eat that kind of thing up with a spoon if a character has a tragic backstory, which Anakin does. He's a former slave who kills a bunch of people and has a crying breakdown.

Playing Dragon Age 2, I was surprised by how popular Fenris was but he has the same deal going on: former slave who killed a bunch of people.

Anakin also has the fact that the sand people had just killed his mum. Whereas with Fenris, he killed a bunch of people who were trying to free him from slavery. Yet he's one of the most popular romance-able characters. Go figure.

So it can be creepy, I guess. But for some people it must scratch an itch.

Fenris kills slavers and is only really shown to do that once I believe, he never has a breakdown about it either, since he believes he's right to kill slavers after what he's gone through. He's also put in comparison with Anders who constantly makes racist and pro-slavery remarks at him. It's not that hard to figure out when there's a literal terrorist standing beside him trying to stab him in the back the entire time.

I'm talking about the Fog Warriors Fenris mentions to the player character if you stop by the mansion. He's pretty drunk when he recalls it. He joined them for a while and they would have helped free him from his master when he shows up, but Fenris killed them all then ran away.

Even so, lots of players love Fenris and find his tragic backstory to be compelling. But I compared him to Anakin because they were both slaves that killed people and then confessed to someone they loved. Fanbase adores Fenris, though the people he killed (Fog Warriors) were entirely innocent and trying to help him. At least in the case of the sand people, they had killed Anakin's mum.

ayrt

Wasn't it that Danarius catches up to Fenris as he tries to escape and orders him to kill the Fog Warriors for trying to help him. Fenris doesn't want to, but Danarius still has mind control over him so he doesn't have a choice. I just find that Fenris is a very strange character to match with Darth Vader of all people. It's not as if he's some ultimate evil overlord or anything.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
There was no mind control because Fenris kills them and runs away. Couldn't have run away if his master had mind control over him. He would have gone back with Danarius if that were the case.

I dunno. The slavery backstory and killing people that they confessed to loved ones is what made me think of the Anakin and Fenris connection.

Considering Anakin's journey ends with him returning to the light he's not the ultimate evil overlord either (that's Palpatine).

I don't know about dragon age at all but I want to point out a fact that I think is relevant here - specifically, that Anakin doesn't just murder the slavers, he then goes and murders their families as well

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, they were all in the same village area and he killed everyone in the area once his mum died, some of whom we know were innocent. But all of the Fog Warriors that Fenris killed was innocent. They were only trying to free Fenris from slavery. They didn't hurt him or kill his mum.

The Fog Warrios, the people that Fenris killed, are natives of an island being invaded by two armies and caught in the middle of their war. They're fighting to free their homeland . Though another character does point out how much he respects the Fog Warriors because they don't harm civilians.

Fenris is, nonetheless, an incredibly popular character and beloved romance option.

Point being, a character killing innocent people in no way precludes them from being likable or seen as a romance option. A lot of people like that in stories because it adds tortured angst! That's why I made the comparison in the first place: because some people will see it as creepy but some like the angst, guilt, and danger it injects into the story.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Fenris doesn't kill the Fog Warriors by his own volition, nor does he do it in a fit of anger/rage. Vader kills these people knowing the innocents and the casualties it will cause because it is his aim to make them pay, it's a conscious decision and one he makes purposefully. They aren't that comparable.

I mean, force-choking his wife was right up there in the creep-factor.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
There was the weird way he told Padme he's been thinking about her every day for years, then when he was watching her sleep and acknowledged she didn't like it, or when she flat out told him he was making her uncomfortable.

Darth is such a loser, I've always felt that way.

I vaguely knew young adult Darth Vader when he was a teenager and it made it impossible to take the prequels seriously. I mean, a lot of things made it hard for me to take the prequels seriously, but seeing someone I know play an iconic villain from my childhood was a big stumbling block in terms of suspension of disbelief for me.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
A-fucking-men, OP. I an Old and I was into Star Wars long before the first sequel series, and I always thought Vader's costume and especially the mask looked stupid. There are very few redeeming qualities about I-III, but at least Darth Maul actually looked cool, even if his character was cardboard-thin.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I felt the same, then Rogue One came out, an lo and behold - Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah, agreed
