I love subtext. I live for subtext. As I said, give me "passionate male friendship" and "male bonding" and "passionate rivalry" and so on anytime (and obviously I'm using inverted commas for a reason). I also don't mind it when a show cranks up the subtext to make fun of itself or the characters or whatever, think Ouran Host Club for example.
What I don't like is what you also mentioned: when a show is designed specifically in a way that it appeals to BL fans (even if it's a case of "BL fans, among others") and keeps using subtext to pander to them. Gundam Seed, for example. Also, one of the reasons I don't watch Gundam 00 is that I look at the characters but all I see is "look, fangirls, here are your new toys! see, that one there is sooo pretty, the other is wild and sexy, the next one is grumpy but cute, etc.! now go write doujinshi!" Maybe it's a decent show otherwise, but I don't like this attitude. Same with lots of other shows, especially nowadays. I'm a fujoshi, I'm totally into slashing characters and whatnot, but I don't like it when a show wants to spoon-feed me the subtext.
(I'm mostly the same way with het/femslash subtext - "mostly," because I have different standards for those, even if this makes me a hypocrite. But the OP was talking about BL.)

Well, they said the same about Gundam Wing back in the day, and that was a rather serious anime. I'm planning to watch 00 sooner or later, but yeah, SEED sort of made me suspicious of the very newest Gundam...

We're all conditioned since birth to think of male/female pairings as the "natural" way of things. I'm trying to be critical of my own thought processes, but it's not as if I always succeed either, heh.
