THANK YOU.

Just because they're framed (vaguely) the same way visually doesn't make them 'a parallel' and people really need to stop saying it, but I always feel petty if I point that out.

And when someone needs to flip the image/reverse the movement of the gif to prove the parallel, that's even worse.

This so much. A good example of this is with Tolkien and Arwen and Luthien. Tolkien parallels them in a few senses, but they are in no way completely identical. They look similar, Arwen is Luthien's descendents, and Arwen makes the same choice Luthien does to be mortal in order to be with a human partner. That's it. That's where their similarities lie. Tolkien never says they are the same person. Luthien is a whole lot of things that Arwen isn't (badass for example, despite what the movies tried to portray).

oh yeah, fandom in general really doesn't understand the terminology it uses like 90% of the time tbh. and this is easily one of the most misused words i come across.

Haaaahaha. Thank you for the flashbacks to the people in the Hetalia fandom who would swear up and down that it was "satire".

(Anonymous) 2020-02-16 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
didn't you know? EVERYTHING IS SATIRE.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Could you elaborate on that, OP?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-16 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but some of the "parallels" I've come across:

- characters wearing similar clothes (suits, black dresses, etc)
- characters eating
- characters running down a set of stairs
- characters driving similar vehicles (motorcycles are a popular choice)
- characters using the same common phrase

Oh man, yeah... I've seen some good parallels, but I've also seen some... non-parallels.
