Questions Thread

You have questions, hopefully somebody can offer answers.

Is there a name for this kink?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I have recently realized that I find it really hot when two (or more) characters are doing something they consider taboo but they're so turned on that they just can't stop themselves. Even if what they're doing is not a kink of mine, or even if it is something completely vanilla, as long as they think it's "forbidden" but they like it too much to stop, I'm all over it.

I've been tentativelly calling it "it's so wrong but it feels so good," but there's gotta be something better than that.

Hell yes, I very strongly feel this. My number one kink has always been the “we shouldn’t, but we can’t stop” kink, in almost all forms, but it’s a difficult kink (or kink set? kink family?) to talk about, because it’s not about any one specific thing - it’s a mindset kink. It’s not what the characters are doing, it’s how they think and feel about what they’re doing.

One branch of it that particularly gets me is when the characters keep telling themselves they’re going to stop in a minute, they just need a little more. But of course they don’t stop.

I recently got into a taboo pairing for the first time in like fifteen years, and I couldn’t believe how much hotter the fic got, simply because all of a sudden my number one kink was everywhere.

Is preferring educated people a kind of bigotry?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not asking purely for me - a fic author is adamant that (at least in-universe) acting agencies wanting/requiring actors to have degrees in acting before they can be employed counts as them being "bigoted fools". One part of me wonders if there is an element of classism in there, as richer people are more likely to be able to afford acting degrees; another, larger part of me thinks it's more a matter of instilling some freaking quality control.

Thoughts?

I think you're right that classism may be an element under the surface, but that it's probably more an attempt at quality control (and also at just plain old regular control).

However, if an agency won't even accept applications (demo reel, resume, and headshots) from actors who don't have diplomas in acting, then that does seem like total bullshit to me. Like, there's a difference between "We prefer people with diplomas, but your application was well put together, you have a great look, and your demo reel impressed us, so we'll take you," and, "We don't accept applications from people without diplomas; come back when you have one."

Thank you for the insight!

Follow-up query on the demo reel angle, as that's slightly confusing to me: does it have to be made up of professional acting stints? Because if a demo reel is one of the components you need to get considered with or without a diploma, how do you build one up with acting gigs if you need one to get a gig in the first place?

If you're brand new and have no experience, you can build a demo reel by taking certain one-off classes (shorter, much cheaper, and not the kind that involve a diploma). I believe there are also people who offer demo reel services, where you prep a scene, read it on camera, they film it and fill in the lines opposite yours from off camera.

To my knowledge, you generally need some kind of a demo reel to get an agent - and obviously a demo reel of credited work is significantly better than a DIY demo reel. But for newbs, DIY (class work or hiring someone to film demo footage for you) is usually all they can provide at first. But having classes to put on your resume also helps, and being drop dead gorgeous helps hugely (if you can swing it, lol).

My knowledge of all this comes from working as a background actor for five years. So I don't have any personal experience (you don't need a demo reel or much of anything really in order to be a BG actor). However, a TON of BG actors are aspiring actors, so you hear them talk about what they're doing all the time. Also, I'm in Vancouver. Standards might be different in LA.

*That should say perform it on camera, not "read."

One more thing to add:

As far as I've been able to gather, having acting experience - especially if its in union productions - is probably a better foot in the door for most newb actors than having a degree or a diploma from an arts college.

A degree proves you're serious about acting, but it doesn't prove you can act. Whereas having multiple credited acting parts proves you were able to convince a production to cast you and it happened more than once so it probably wasn't just a fluke.

However, if you come out of your degree program with a lot of proof of your acting accomplishments from your time in the program (like you joined numerous theater productions and/or independent film productions), then obviously that's going to be a big help, too. But it's really the proof that you acted in some things and were at least decent at it that the agencies like, one way or another.

It depends on the context, right?

Like, does having a degree, or whatever other credential, actually speak to how much ability a person has? or is it just a marker of their skill at attaining the credentials? If having a degree isn't closely tied to skill and ability, then it probably is just classism.

Why is it that my kink preferences can sometimes change dramatically depending on what ship I'm reading. Like, humiliation is normally a do not want kink for me. But make the ship Kylo/Hux and suddenly humiliation, as long as it is combined with praise, is the hottest thing ever. On the other hand, normally I really love playing with power dynamics and when the more boss character/bigger and stronger character is more submissive except when it comes to my OTP Melkor/Sauron. With them I'll play with the dynamics sometimes but mostly I very much stick to Melkor being in charge in the bedroom, though admittedly I think their work dynamics were more fluid and Sauron was never one to just do as he was told.

It feels like most people have clear cut preferences, and while I do have favorite kinks, it feels like I'm much more fluid and more go with what works for the particular ship and how I see those characters and their relationship I guess?

So maybe my real favorite kink is in-character porn?

It sounds to me that your kink is competent character work, not tropes. So as long as it's in-character for your preferred pairing, you're good to go.

That makes sense. Sometimes I do seek out pairings for whom a particular kink is in-character for. I just really hate out-of-character porn. It throws me right out. The sex needs to make sense for it to work for me.

TBH this is what does it for me, too. I've discovered some really out there kinks this way, but it was IC for my ships, and thus I just found it hot when I wouldn't have before.

Write my ships OCC though and no matter even if it's a kink I already had, I will hate it.
