I’m not usually a big horror fan but there are some authors whose stuff I’ll read no matter how little sleep I’ll get for days afterwards. T. Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon’s The Twisted Ones was really interesting, and I loved the characters, when it wasn’t making me want to invest in some stadium floodlights for my yard and possibly a shotgun and a big dog.

Relic by Lincoln Preston
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris

And from my teens, there were quite a few Christopher Pike (Weekend, Final Friends Trilogy, Remember Me, etc.) and Lois Duncan (Down a Dark Hall, Summer of Fear, The Third Eye etc.) books that worked for me, though some didn't, but you can check them out and see if any work for you - still have a few on my shelves.

Break up songs from the POV of the one calling it quits? Preferably of the "I'm better alone than with you" variety.

Most of these are kind of ambiguous as to who left who, but none of them are straight up “you left me.” I don't think any of them come across like the singer wants their ex back - just that they have a lot of feelings about it being over.

I think I'm honestly just past the point of caring about box office results at all. A movie doing well or poorly is not a referendum on whether it's good and it's certainly not a referendum on social justice. Half the movies I love failed at the box office anyway.

Anyone else starting to get kinda tired of obsessing over box office results like they somehow validate anything?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the person whose comment got made into Secret #1, but honestly, yeah, I'm tired of it, too. I like what I like and tune out stuff like box office numbers or even Rotten Tomatoes/critic aggregators.

(Tumblr's making me feel a little guilty for not wanting to support a female-driven, female-directed movie, though. My woke points will just have to take a hit this month.)

I know what you mean. Some of my favorite movies are ones that were not big hits and some movies I hated were extremely popular.

I'm tired of *hearing* about it, for sure. Because - fuck if I care. I can't afford to see more than a couple movies a year at the theater, anyway, and that's just not something i look into before choosing what I want to go see.

So - yeah. The fucking worse fucking movies make millions of dollars. Those fucking HANGOVER movies made tons of money. So fuck that.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're invested in a property getting continued installments, you kind of have to care about box office performance. Wonder Woman, for example, was a film I would have seen no matter what, but even more than wanting it to be good, I wanted it to do well. That was almost more important.
