I'm willing to not condemn her simply due to the number of actors that have "disappeared" when they said things that the Chinese government hasn't liked. It's hard to say what she actually believes and what she was "encouraged" to believe...

I dunno, lots of actors get by without saying anything one way or the other. Plus, she's Chinese American, she'd have a place to go. The most insidious I can guess is that Disney really wants this movie to do well in China, so gave her the green light to say something really pro-China.

Joke will be on them, "Asian" Hollywood movies never do well in Asia.

That's assuming that she can even get back here.

And calling her Chinese American makes it sound as if she was born here and simply went to China, when she actually only spent a few years in the US as a child and got her citizenship then.

My only stance is that it's hard to now the entire story because of how the Chinese government is.

She could really be an asshole who believes that the Hong Kong police were correct or she could have be threaten to support them. WE DON'T KNOW.

Nonetheless, she could easily go to America if she were afraid. She's literally working with Disney, one of the most powerful organizations in the world, and she's an American citizen.

I agree, the Chinese government is fucked up. I agree, it's possible she could have a gun to her head - and that it would certainly be hard for her to say anything anti-China. But I think it's way, WAY more likely that this is her honest opinion - which would be a pretty normal opinion to have in China, tbh. Don't cut her slack hoping for a conspiracy theory.

nayrt - I realize I’m just piling on speculation, but if she immigrated as a child, odds are pretty high she still has family in China - herself being an American citizen/Disney employee wouldn’t necessarily do them any favors. (Not that that precludes her from believing what she’s saying, of course.)

Not everyone's involved in a high profile movie that's guaranteed to have a huge audience in the U.S. as well as China, though. As for being Chinese-American... technically she's got U.S. citizenship, but she only lived here for a handful of years when she was a kid. Her life and career is in China, and she's likely got friends and family in China.

I know it sounds nuts, but you simply do not have the kinds of civil rights and protection in China as you do in the U.S., including free speech. You can be rich and famous and still disappear if you put a foot wrong.

But not speaking in favour of police is always an option. This seems to be the missing element of this whole discussion. Not all Chinese stars have spoken about the issue to support the Chinese government, there is no reason for her to bring it up.

(Most likely, that's her opinion. People do support the government within China and leaving abroad does not automatically mean you change your point of view. I've seen many people leaving in the West fully supporting autocratic governments of their home countries, it's fairly common.)
