Should we go on a rampage and try to convince people to start shipping Chidi and Micheal together? Chidi and Jason? Chidi and the guy who plays Pimento from B99? Maybe? ...No?
(actually speaking of B99 Kevin and Holt are like the perfect couple imo)

Personally I'm a huge fan of best friend type ships so, while I don't watch Scrubs, I'm pretty sure they'd be my ship. It has more to do with dynamic than their race I would say, so I wouldn't feel too guilty if I were you.

Excuse you, Jake/Doug Judy forever.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh~ I forgot about that one. Definitely the best star-crossed lovers of the show, for sure!

(Anonymous) 2020-02-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I think it's fine if you don't ship Turk and JD together. Turk and JD are more like best buddies to even practically family that I personally can't see anything romantic about them. Those are only my personal feelings however, and maybe someone else can make a romantic dynamic work.

A vaguely on-topic anecdote: The writers of Scrubs received a lot of letters from men that said that seeing JD and Turk's intimate friendship on TV helped them out on making their own platonic friendships more intimate and personal since it the chance of it being seen as gay in IRL society was lessened. IDK, I'm just thinking about the show in general now fandom aside, and I still appreciate how good of a show it was.

No one ever ships best buddies together romantically. Famously so. Spock/Kirk, House/Wilson, and Sherlock/Watson are all really famous for the fact that no one ships them.

(I don't think anyone should be obligated to ship a certain way, but the idea that people don't ship a pairing exclusively because of the dynamic and race has nothing to do with it is exhausting when there's a million examples to the contrary. It's not a tenable argument)

anon you're replying to:

What I said was "Those are only my personal feelings however, and maybe someone else can make a romantic dynamic work." Like me personally, I don't ship it and am not sure how to. I give everybody else the freedom to ship it. What I was trying to say to OP is that it's fine if they don't specifically ship it either.

dean/castiel, sheppard/mckay, face/murdock, steve/bucky, steve/tony(in the comics).

like no one ships best friends at all! it's so rare!

Yeah I'm really done pretending that there isn't a huge racial bias in fandom, I've been in it long enough to see how most interracial ships, but especially those involving black characters, get ignored, erased, and tossed aside for a white one.

And pointing at the few interracial ships that actually do get some kind of notice doesn't change the fact that a majority of them don't, even when the dynamics are the exact kind that would get oodles of content if it was two white guys(or guy/girl) instead.

Lots of people ship best friend pairings. But also, the difference between the "best friend" vibe vs. the "bickering lovers" or "romantic tension" vibes have long been a fandom thing (see: Harry Potter fandom and the Ron/Hermione vs. Harry/Hermione ship wars). Lots of people are really turned off by the idea of shipping best friends.

As someone who ships best friend ships a lot, I really have no idea why people are getting offended by what you said here;; It's perfectly valid, and very well worded if I say so myself.
I'd like to talk about the dynamics myself if you don't mind, but only if you want to. People are jumping on you enough as it is that I'd understand if you wouldn't want to;;

I love the anecdote btw! I remember a couple of friends who got broken up in highschool because they were close and people made jokes about it... It always upset me, so I'm glad there's a show that allows people to just be best friends and not be weirded out by it for whatever reason.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
No one is actually jumping on them, pointing out that friend-dynamics 'not being shipped' is a lie is not 'hate' or even all that aggressive. Pointing out that fandom has a race-issue is also not 'hate' but lord knows fandom can't ever discuss this without people acting like they are being personally attacked.

If you aren't discarding CoC and ignoring them as shippable characters, then you're not what we're talking about.

I actually agree with your points about these two and the show depicting a wonderfully close and loving m+m friendship was a good thing, and something I very much enjoyed about it. But this discussion isn't about how they are in the show, it's about how fandom looks at a dynamic like theirs between a WC+CoC and deems it 'unshippable' when were they two white guys everyone would love them and cite them as 'so gay'.

sorry I'm not in the mood for bullshit

i didn't ship these two simply because i loved jordan/dr.cox so much, they were so weirdly functionally dysfunctional and i couldn't see anyone but jordan managing to get dr.cox exactly how she did, and vice versa.

insofar as turk goes though i could ship him with carla or JD(or both) tbh, they were both really good and fun dynamics.

look, this conversation is really about fandom-level movement, not necessarily everyone's personal level ships.

instead of feeling guilty, look at your ships. do you have ANY POC ships? If not, why not? Do you not really watch many shows with dynamic POC? If you do have POC ships, why do you like that dynamic? You don't necessarily have to do anything about any of these questions, but it's a good idea to think about what interests you and why.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have exactly one ship and that I seriously shipped and it's from JCS musical. I don't feel guilty about that for several reasons.

I'd not blame anyone for not being attracted to characters with certain characteristics.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
As other people said, dynamic is also a big factor. With Scrubs, I would ship Turk/JD before Cox/JD, but that's primarily because I love friends-to-lovers (and enemies-to-lovers), but I really tend not to like mentor/mentee relationships turning sexual.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
This sums up some of why I much prefer Morgan/Reid to Hotch/Reid from "Criminal Minds". I like friends to lovers, too, and Morgan and Reid had a great friendship that I could easily see growing to something more. Hotch just comes off far too much as a father figure to Reid for me to see anything romantic there. And even setting that aside, I just can't see him being the sort to get romantically involved with any of the younger members of his team.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I can only ship Turk/JD in college fics, but that's because I love Turk/Carla too damn much to mess with it.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way when it comes to Psych since I don't ship Shawn/Gus, and do ship Shawn/Lassie (although it's not my OTP).

But I do have OTPs with characters of color (like Sam/Steve and Heimdall/Thor/Loki) in other media so I think I can say it's just the dynamic in this particular instance that doesn't work for me.

I think the real problem is having only one character of color on a show. If the character type they portray or the dynamic with other characters doesn't work for you, you only have that one character of color versus (often) several different white characters with a variety of personalities. It increases the odds that there's someone to be fannish about among the white characters just by the law of averages. Solution should be to have more characters of color on any given show.

Considering that fandom is suppose to be a form of fun - forcing yourself to go along with a ship just because everyone else in the fandom say so kind of defeats the purpose.

Unless you're going around telling people that they shouldn't ship JD/Turk or making some kind of hatepost about it, you liking another ship isn't going to take away the existence of that ship in the first place. Its not like you owe anyone your free time about it.

I mean... OP is allowed to feel guilty?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
.... Is this a real comment?

Anyway, feeling guilty about not shipping something that includes a CoC is unproductive. If this is a pattern for OP they may choose to examine it, but even then forcing themselves to like the ship would be useless. It'd make them miserable and it wouldn't help the fans either.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
lol yeah ok, I'm sure that comment makes sense in some version of reality.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I normally ship best friends (my OTP for Psych was Shawn and Gus, and I do think the race thing has some bearing on its unpopularity), but with Scrubs, I wound up being so charmed by Turk and Carla's relationship-- and the way that their relationship evolved alongside the unbreakable bond between him and JD-- that I didn't ship the two of them as I might have expected. Though if I rewatched it now, I might wind up shipping them in a poly situation. I never really liked any of JD's romances, and Turk does have two hands...

Though, while JD and Cox aren't the type of ship I usually go for, I can definitely see it. The blindly adoring puppy love of early seasons matures into something where JD really sees Cox as a person with flaws and needs.
