My guess is Cortese is clueless because Jared and Jensen frequently admit Kripke doesn't tell them what's going on, either (but they've been with the characters so long they can interpret what's going on better whereas I think Cortese is still feeling out her role).

^--I could just be in denial, but I hold firm to this theory because otherwise, my soul will shatter in half if there's some actual true lovin' going on there. But I doubt it since Kripke doesn't really come off as a romantic to me; I'm pretty sure he was the guy who insisted on choosing a hand mangling scene as his favourite scene ever.

I'm severely disappointed with Cortese as it is, and that interview did her no favors.

Maybe someone needs to inform her that her character is a demon. Even though she's doing a crap job of portraying one, Ruby is still a demon, and in order for Ruby to be saying all this crap about remembering her humanity, and Cortese's theory of true love, Ruby would have to be lying through her teeth, because in order for demons to be demons, their humanity and memories are stripped completely, and there are no sweet sparkly feelings.

See, in the context of the canon alone disregarding Cortese's interpretation of the character, Ruby's transformation into this nicer demon makes perfect sense to me, so I've never minded it personally.

The groundwork for her submissive personality was already (rather cleverly, actually) laid out way back in 3.09. We know she can act obedient if she wants to for manipulative purposes. When we catch up with her in the flashbacks for the first time in 4.09, she was still her snarky, abrasive self. But Sam tells her to GTFO, so she returns in a new body (not because she felt possessing a live person was wrong, but because she'd never be able to get close to Sam otherwise) and then acts nicer so he won't kick her out again. And because technically he can send her ass back to hell any time now--and because she seems to need him for some reason (kill Lilith, possibly, although I suspect there's more), it's in her best interests to keep being nice to him. She's won his trust and there's no reason to lose it by being all sarcastic again the way she was in S3. Watch the way she switches almost immediately from pleading ("what's wrong?") to pure seduction when she's coming onto Sam. That abrupt flip is manipulation at its best right there, where she's all about finding the right mode to wear Sam down.

I don't think her portrayal of Ruby is entirely a fault of Cortese. I think a large part of it is actual deliberate direction (there is no, no way that Kripke and the directors would allow her to act so far off base; the painfully flat line delivery I agree is all Cortese, but the actual portrayal of Ruby's character--not so much. Although Cortese did improve immensely this last episode which was nice to see.)

That said, I also don't think it's impossible for her to be both a demon and recall her humanity. That's not to say I think she's good or that she is in any way a real human. What she may retain is some twisted sparks of human feelings which can be an interesting scenario because it makes her a wild card among a bunch of demons who essentially want to a) destroy the world/cause random chaos or b) serve the YED's endgame/serve Lilith/raise Lucifer. It lets her become a demon who has an agenda of her own, serving neither evil nor good, but herself and using Sam to get where she wants to be.

Humanity =/= sparkly feelings. Sam's got human feelings, too, but he's hardly sparkly. And I also think it's possible for her to love Sam without it being romantic because love doesn't always equal romance either. Love can easily border on obsession or neediness and it's a very fine line.

Plus, I really don't care of Ruby loves/cares for Sam in her own twisted way because Sam doesn't love Ruby. He trusts her on a professional level (she won't betray him) and there might be a slight emotional connection because she did save his life, but there's never been a single spark of romance between them, especially not on Sam's end. When Ruby isn't there, he's not pining after her or even showing any sign that he notices she's missing. Ruby's the one who's always having to seek him out.

So until Sam starts making googly eyes over her and taking her out on dates, I'm perfectly okay with him a) feeling like he owes her in some way because that makes sense and doesn't indicate romance; b) banging her for purely physical and non-romantic reasons; and c) using her to find a way to both kill Lilith and obtain other useful information.

Just popping in here to say that this conversation wins. I don't actually hate this new interpretation of Ruby as much as I did before now. Thank you--you deserve an internet for this. >3
