Tony Stark. I could write a book on the eye rolling stuff his fans say about him.

I freaking love Tony, but... let's just say it was Marvel fic that got me to finally add 'bashing' to my blacklist on AO3dr :/

ooof, yeah. i actually like him as a character but good lord his fanbase is so loud and so stupid. i know not all of them are like that, but it's hard to find the more reasonable people within the chaos of fans acting like he's the only character in the MCU that has any issues.

Yeah. I like Tony in his individual movies and I still read fics where he is a major character but I can't stand him in team fics. I had to blacklist a ton of "Team Iron Man" phrases.

Yeah, he is one of the most privileged MCU characters. He is a rich, white, straight, and able-bodied man in the US.

same anon: but HE'S SO OPPRESSED, DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND???

lol, sorry. but yeah out of all of them he has the ability to at least attempt to get help? and also has a pretty solid family-unit to stand by him, not that the others don't have their support systems(eventually anyway) but they have much less safety-nets for them to fall back on, he basically has everything and a feather mattress to boot.

yeah trauma isn't a competition but he's not the worst off by a long shot.

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2020-03-30 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
That is one of my biggest pet peeves. He has a fantastic support system with Pepper, Rhodey, and Happy. He also has access to the best medical and mental help he could want. Yet, he never uses these resources and everyone around him suffers because of it.

"""""""""""""able-bodied"""""""""""

um

what fantastically fucked-up definition of able-bodied are YOU using, then?

Re: Based on secret 1

The one that was his state of being for the first 40+ years of his life?

Re: Based on secret 1

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
So, because my father was 43 when a car crash broke half the bones in his body and left him crippled and in pain for the rest of his life, he's "able-bodied". By your definition.
Right.

I see you didn't comprehend the fact we are talking about the background of the main MCU characters. In which Tony Stark has had a very privileged upbringing. Though, you could also focus on the current Tony Stark who apparently had his arc reactor removed since that was apparently an option?

Re: Based on secret 1

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
You're the one using a definition of able-bodied that means "for the first twenty minutes of this character's first movie".
Do you also think Edward Elric is able-bodied because he gets a whole ten years of life before he loses an arm and a leg?

And as for the arc reactor... If a guy got hit with shrapnel, was told it couldn't be removed, carried it around for ten years, every day knowing it might move and kill him dead... And then medical technology advanced after ten years and he got it removed... And then someone pointed to him and said "well now he's able-bodied, he doesn't get trauma points, duh", would you think:
A) "yes, that is a completely reasonable position to hold", or
B) "wow, what a shithead."

Re: Based on secret 1

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Stark's depiction in the films is deeply privileged in many, many ways and his disability is presented as basically a narrative issue. It surfaces in ways that are connected with the main emotional plot beats of the respective movies, and generally not otherwise. In part this is because of the massive privilege that otherwise characterizes his situation in life.

Of course, any real person in Stark's position would obviously be profoundly affected by their disability (as well as the many other crippling emotional issues, PTSD, etc). But the relevant question here is how Stark is narratively portrayed, what happens in the on-screen depiction.

Re: Based on secret 1

Stark didn't spontaneously come into being in that movie. All those characters had different upbringings. In this case, both Thor and Stark were extremely privileged. Bruce was raised by an abusive father. Steve was chronically disabled and poor. Natasha was raised as a child soldier. MCU Clint is a blank slate.

Look. Tony has some bad shit happen to him. Unlike 99% of the population there are no limits on the help he can get. The problem is that canonically he doesn't get help. Instead he does things like create a murder-bot.

In which Tony Stark has had a very privileged upbringing.
Excuse the fuck outta me for intruding, but what the hell does Tony Stank's privileged upbringing have to do with whether or not he's able bodied? Yeah, he's a dickhead, but in all sincerity, what does that have to do with whether or not the man's disabled? Do you think money makes it not count? Is there a cutoff point - or is it more like a sliding scale, like hitting a million dollars will cure deafness, but you've got to get at least a billion before you can walk out of that wheelchair, little Timmy?

(seriously, you said something stupid, you can just cop to it and we can all move on)

Re: Based on secret 1

I mean, his money does allow him to completely repair his heart as if nothing happened. So after Iron Man 3 he is seemingly cured of all his physical problems.

And again, when talking about the MCU characters backgrounds, Tony's (and Thor's) background is quite privileged.

I agree. I was annoyed that he took over things in the last two Avengers movies and in Civil War, but I still liked him as a character. Then his fans started being nasty to anyone who said anything remotely critical about him or how he was written. Then I did start to kind of dislike him. I don't hate him per say. But his fans have soured me more on him than I otherwise would have been.
