Re: How's everybody handling lockdown?

I'm personally doing ok today. But am getting annoyed with people in the UK complaining about prisons being tested for the virus, saying they should just get it and if they die too bad etc.

My brother-in-law is a prison officer, so he can't stay at home. He's NOT a criminal. And not that I really go in for the whole "criminals should be punished by lack of health care" angle that this is taking, but if you leave the inmates aside it's as though people are forgetting that the STAFF are also at risk. Disease spreads rapidly in prison but all anyone can think about is some form of justice boner while ignoring the fact it's not just the "bad guys" who'll get sick. My brother-in-law returns home every night to my sister and two kids under 4 for example.

So basically...I'm handling the lockdown ok for once but am getting pissed off at other people using it as an excuse to be self-righteous without thinking about what they're saying.

People are disgusting.

You’d think self interest would get to people, if nothing else. People who work at or visit prisons can carry viruses out into the wider world. It’s not like they could just abandon the sick to die to avoid transmitting it. Except there are people out there so devoid of compassion they’re probably pushing for that right now.

Some of the comments and attitudes I've seen throughout this whole thing really makes me want to just bitchslap some people a few dozen times.

I hope your brother-in-law and his family will be okay. And I hope everyone else at the prison will be okay, too.

Those people don't know anything about anything and/or are completely without empathy. Hope your family is okay.

Same thing happens in the US, only with a side of grossness from the other end of the aisle saying the Corrections Officers deserve what's coming to them for being part of a corrupt prison system. Which is its own brand of self-righteous with a stiff dose of classism, given the economic landscape where most US prisons are located, but some people can't resist the urge to kick someone when they're down if they can cloak it in some moral outrage.

Oh yes, definitely a smidge of that here too. I don't deny that there might be some sadistic bastards who use that sort of job as an excuse to bully other human beings...but I bet more are just trying to earn a living, some with little other options. It's real life not the Shawshank Redemption.
