Advice thread

I really need some but I don't want it to be the top comment.

What should I have for lunch tomorrow? I'm sick of pizza, chicken sandwiches, pasta, chicken wings, omelettes, chips.

That's a lot of starch and grease. Have anything fresh or frozen that can be steamed? Or spicy? Do you like curry?

Oh, it's not like I ate all of them all at once, and the chicken wings were the only greasy things.

I've got some broccoli, onion, shallots, garlic, sweet potatoes, and red potatoes. Meat is frozen and consists of chicken legs and chicken thighs, beef stew meat, and a salmon steak. I enjoy curry but don't have the proper spices on hand. (But I'll be going to the grocery store this week.)

I also have canned chili and canned soup. And a pack of bulghur wheat... if I can get to the store for some fresh ingredients, I'll probably make some tabbouleh.

When it doubt, check the ingredient index at Budget Bytes.

For example, here's the sweet potato recipes:

https://www.budgetbytes.com/tag/sweet-potato/

Together with the chicken you could do the Smoky Chicken and Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potato Meal Prep (use broccoli instead if green beans). I quite like the Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potatoes on their own, too, if I just need a quick and easy way to prepare a sweet potato.

DA

If you can broil or slow roast your food, try Googling "sheet pan recipes". I swear, there's a sheet pan recipe for every taste and budget.

I think I got fired?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
To make a long story short and not get too personal, I had some issues with the way my workplace was handling the pandemic. I emailed work last night saying I wasn't coming in but am happy to work from home. So this morning my boss is texting me general questions like where this file, etc. And then asks where my password list is. And then says she'll mail my check tomorrow. (I was supposed to start having Tuesdays off this week and that's our usual payday). It was all so passive-aggressive and ambiguous and weird. I talked to my parents about it and my mom said I should ask point blank if I'm fired and my dad said they're trying to get me to quit. I'm half tempted to just apply for unemployment without another word, but that's probably unwise. God damn. I don't know. It took me all weekend to get the courage to send the original email, I don't know how I'm supposed to ask "Am I fired?"

Help?

I’m sorry, that sucks. I don’t really have any advice. Maybe ask what your tasks would be if they let you work from home? Were you going to take unpaid leave or use sick leave if they wouldn’t let you, or did they offer the option to work from home and then got weird when you said yes?

Re: I think I got fired?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't offer it at all. I asked about it and they kinda brushed me off, so I asked again because basically my whole family was like "they are being really unsafe". I don't have any sick leave left but I've been kind of like "should I quit?" for a couple of weeks now, because it might be that I'd have good cause to still get unemployment if I did. But now I'm just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's a pretty shit way to fire someone if they actually did. Sorry, I don't know what I would do in your situation OP, but I don't think I would just ask them if I'm fired, it's the sort of thing I just expect to be clearly told.
If she's mailing your check tomorrow perhaps you can expect some other details about your employment status, though.

Thanks. This is honestly helpful. I think it's totally unprofessional whether or not they fired me. Like, respond to my questions and give me some clear communication! Ugh.

Keep going until they officially fire out. Better change of getting unemployment.

I don't think you can apply for unemployment without being fired, offically. I guess you can try working as usual, and touching base with your boss to let her know you've gotten done and clarify what she'd like you to tackle next. But uh... your boss may have taken your "not coming to work today" announcement as you quitting. If you don't actually want to lose this job, I'd proceed with caution.

Re: I think I got fired?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-06 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point I really don't mind losing my job. I guess what I was getting at is, do I take "I'll mail your check" as firing and go for it. I can't really work as usual without physically going into the office so...I GUESS I'm resigning or asking if I'm fired. Welp.

Re: I think I got fired?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-07 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...yeah. Given what just said about not being able to do your work unless you're physically in the office, that looks more like you accidentally quit without meaning to.

I guess to clarify, it's a job that could be done from home but they're refusing to allow that. But you can get unemployment if you quit with good cause, which includes feeling unsafe. So there's that.

and I just realized I posted this in the wrong subthread

I'd do stir fry. Pretty easy to make. You can then have it with either pasta or rice, depending on what you have in your cabinet and can make.

Fanfic question

(Anonymous) 2020-04-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
If you mention cool outfits for other characters does it cancel out giving your main character a cool outfit?
