Japanese syllables are pretty much always pronounced the same way. It's yah-oh-ee.

...Except that the word has now been adopted into English, and therefore has no obligation to be pronounced the Japanese way - and shouldn't be, because pronouncing it that way just sounds incredibly stiff and weird in the context of English.

Also, you should maybe find other yaoi fangirls to be around. I definitely don't have a "horrible screeching fangirl voice" but I say it as yow-ee. :P

Actually, I don't care when most words are mispronounced but because of the tendency for this particular word to be mispronounced in the most fucking annoying way possible, I hate it. YOWEE. It sounds like you stubbed your toe but you're too polite to say FUUUUUCK.

I think the fact that people feel this is "wrong" or "abnormal" is just kind of a testament to how mainstream society and the media has the utter inability to differentiate between fiction and reality with all their bullshit about how OMG! Video games are responsible for social violence! Gossip Girl has sex on the show and girls who watch it are more likely to have sex!

Um, no. Correlation =/= causation.

Eli Roth may create sadistic torture porn like Hostel, but I wholeheartedly believe that he and his fans are not all a bunch of raving, foaming serial killers or that they're somehow screwed in the head. Similarly, I can enjoy watching people blow shit up in a movie and still know how to draw the line wherein I would most definitely not enjoy the same thing in real life.

No, it's not the same. The way I've heard it pronounced by Americans, they use a long W sound that simply shouldn't be there. YOWWWWEE. No. Yaaah-oh-ee.

Well, all the syllables are supposed to be short, of course. I haven't heard it pronounced by an American; it's hard to tell what people try to describe by text alone, sometimes!

It's basically their inability to keep their mouth movements precise. Laziness, as far as I can tell. They go straight from ah to ee without forming an oh clearly, so it turns into wwwww. That's the best that I can describe it, lol.

I have to agree with the american thing, they have a sorta drawly accent so it might be why, it's probably just similar to the way Japanese people can't pronounce the name "George" etc.
