...Except that the word has now been adopted into English, and therefore has no obligation to be pronounced the Japanese way - and shouldn't be, because pronouncing it that way just sounds incredibly stiff and weird in the context of English.

An individual name is a very different case from a general word of the language, try again.

If someone has a preferred way of being called, then it's only polite to call them that way. But individual names aren't the same as words you actually use in a language, because each word has a particular way they're supposed to be pronounced - and everyone who speaks the language pronounces it that way. Foreign names don't have standardized pronunciations, so it's only natural that people get mixed up and confused over your name sometimes.
