I don't know this book, but it always bothers me when the protagonists try to prove a culture of any kind is inherently wrong or strange simply because it's different from what the main characters are used to. Like leave them alone! They didn't ask for to be assimilated, fuck off!

k I'm gonna be that guy...long screeds about why your ship is bad and ship wars in general way pre-dated tumblr. it even pre-dated livejournal.

however...I do get that tumblr and social media in general is different from those days in that back then, you had to seek out contrary opinions and hate and screeds and manifestos. Even on lj you had to be following the right people to get accidentally blindsided by their bullshit. whereas a tag system means when you follow the tag, you stand a higher statistical chance of some rando using the tag to spew their hate to people who genuinely never wanted to see it. so I'll give you that.

but lol back in my day (ye olde 2002) it was not at all unusual to find an author on a single-fandom archive posting their ship manifestos and screeing to the wind about how much the other ship sucks because you just don't get the characters like I do.

I like Christopher Reeve but I don't know how much of that is nostalgia considering I watched the first couple of Superman films quite a lot when I was growing up (and they were already over a decade old by that point!)

I kinda feel similar to your secret about Bruce Wayne. I don't think a life action adaption has quite got the Bruce Wayne part of Batman's identity right and the Batman portion is all over the place as well depending on the film/actor.

Marvel has generally done ok, even in the non-MCU films. I know the X-Men films are generally a bit shit but (again, this might be nostalgia, mostly from my teens this time...) I've always enjoyed Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in their respective roles.

To be honest, I'm mostly wondering what "She has a fucking gas" means.

Like, I don't know, so much of this comes down to how things are portrayed and contextualized in whatever series is going on that it seems impossible to make any definitive judgment about what's going on. There are plenty of characters that you can make varingly-tenable arguments are mass murderers and we're still fine with that because they're the heroes of the stories, and I don't really have a problem with that. And with this instance, I don't have the context.
