Can I just check I am still on the same internet? TW Rape

[personal profile] thewakokid 2020-04-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm arguing with this guy - Surprise sur-fucking-prise, right? - who is of the opinion that rape kink is some out-there strange abnormal fringe kink.

This is on twitter.

And He seems to have a lot of support. Like a LOT of support.

Have I... quantum-leaped into a different internet? One where everyone is degrees more vanilla?

Seriously, he's saying that liking FICTIONL rape makes you a danger to women. That he would fight to make sure I am never left alone with a woman.

I asked him if he thought the same of Feet guys, if they shouldn't be left alone with women and he said "No, I wouldn't trust them with women either" which... I mean...

But I'm not out of my mind here, right? Rapekink is INCREDIBLY common, isn't it?

People with (fictional) rape kinks in fandom are dime a dozen and that's pretty normal here. Some people don't like that, but YKINMK, w/e.

But I mean, I wouldn't want to associate with someone in real life that told me about their rape kink. Not because they have one, but because they have one and lacked the basic social awareness to not randomly tell me about it in a non-fandom space.

Twitter is not a fandom space.

I kinda feel like twitter IS a fandom space, tho. I mean most of my fandom interactions are on twitter now. And this was on a fan artist page thread...

Twitter *can* be, but it's not AO3 or some community pointedly dedicated to fandom. Like an artists page isn't necessarily a fandom space even if they do fan art, because it's going to draw a lot of people who are fans of series but aren't "in and familiar with fandom as a community" which are different things imo

I see your point. I don't think I entirely agree, but i get what your saying.

Yeah. I just mean you are in fact wandering into a different section of the internet that draws different sections of people where they'd probably also react the same way to mpreg alpha omega butt baby slave universe whump fic whereas like, here, it's just. Oh. I guess you're one of the people who have that kink. And everyone knows and accepts a ton of women have a rape kink too. Whatever floats ur boat in fiction

I've always thought of twitter as being super public, which is why I hesitate to post fanart there, but I'm kind of shocked by the sheer volume of fanart posted. I think it's becoming more of a fandom space which is great in some ways, but (unrelated to your comment) is kinda like, I worry what non-fandom people think when they see some stuff....I have a feeling twitter will crack down and start censoring a lot of stuff at some point like tumblr did.

Exactly, or to realize that it might not be appropriate to tell me about it even in some fandom spaces.

To me there's a big difference between a woman telling me she fantasizes about being raped and a man telling me he fantasizes about raping someone... In a perfect world I wouldn't care but I just don't trust most men enough to be 100% chill about it :/
"Make sure i am never left alone with a woman" is a bit much though.

I think there's varying types of rape kink, and it's not fair to assume every man with a rape kink is fantasizing about raping fictional women. Like there's fantasizing about raping a fictional character, fantasizing about being raped by a fictional character, and - this last one seems vastly the most common in my experience - people who find "characters being raped by other characters" a turnon, and don't put themselves personally in either role

NAYRT - I agree with this. Personally, if guy fantasizes about raping a fictional character, I wouldn't want to be friends with him or be alone with him. Maybe it means nothing. Maybe it stops with fictional characters. But rape is a pretty rampant problem in the real world and I'm not going to take a chance with a dude who fantasizes about raping, even if it is just a fictional character.

However, if someone merely finds "character being raped by character" a turnon, and doesn't put themself in either role, I feel a lot more chill about that.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel. Part of me feels like if some people fantasize about being raped as a submissive fantasy, but not actually want to be raped, then why can't others fantasize about raping as a dominant fantasy but not actually want to rape. On the other hand, given the sexism of our culture and media, part of me is uncomfortable because it would be easy for that type of fantasy to go hand in hand with sexism and real life not respecting women's boundaries. But then back on the other hand, fantasy doesn't have to have real life implications, and when it doesn't I do believe in fantasy being fantasy and YKINMKATO.

So I don't know.

Yeah, this is one instance in which I'm perfectly comfortable being 100% completely sexist, I admit it. It's not particularly nice or even very fair of me but I would absolutely not trust a man that admitted that he had a rape fantasy. I'm sorry.

IDK, I'd say the red flag there is "fantasizes about raping someone", not "man". There are definitely women who fantasize about being the rapist, and there are definitely men who fantasize about being the victim.

(And there are people who get off on fictional depictions of rape that don't involve them in any respect, which is probably the most common use of 'rape kink' in a fandom context, tbh.)

+0.5 For me, it's a combination of "fantasizes about raping someone" and "does not respect other people's boundaries."

In fact, "does not respect other people's boundaries" is a much bigger red flag for me. Someone who has fantasies about raping someone might ot might not act one them irl, someone who doesn't respect other people's boundaries already is acting on their fantasies in the real world.
