I agree. I suspect that a lot of fic writers aren't interested in doing a ton of research and just want to get to the character interaction part, with the historical/factual aspect being window dressing at best. But I wish more writers would take the time to get the basic details right, or find a way around them so that they aren't including glaring errorrs.

OP of the comment for the secret.

Yes, you're probably right. I mean, I'm guilty myself of just wanting to get to the character interaction sometimes when writing, but that generally means I use canon/canon-similar situations or something I'm familiar with as backdrop.

I wish more writers would take the time, too. I shouldn't be left staring at my screen in disbelief, thinking that's not how anatomy/biology/physics/geography/etc. works, when reading a fic.

Yes. If writers want to get to that part, I'd prefer it if they wrote the fic in such a way that doesn't linger on all the non-interaction parts that end up being poorly researched or obviously fudged.

Thanks to the Secret Maker!

Thanks for making my comment into a secret, that library seems like a nice place to do research.

I think a lot of writers think that either people won't notice (they do) or that it doesn't matter (it does).

I get that a lot of people write fanfic to have fun and have no desire to put effort into it. And that's okay. But for me, even if something is a hobby you should strive to get better - you don't have to drive yourself crazy (I don't), just do your best. I think it will make people more satisfied with their writing if they actually see the improvement.

BTW I did a ton of research for my last fic, and I believe it was one the things MOST commented on. I had readers in the fields I was writing about (mostly psychology but some crime stuff too) and they most definitely appreciated the realism. And I've got to say, there's nothing like an expert in a field saying you nailed it!

I agree, if you're going to write about something make sure it pertains to canon, and if it's something not addressed in canon, then to your best ability through research and logic.
Like honestly, I don't mind it much so long as it doesn't contradict things explicitly or too often, but I'll like get on my hands and knees when the writers go the extra mile because you can just /tell/, and it makes everything so much greater. Once I remember reading a fic where the author left some of their research notes in the last chapter, and I was like grinning for days over it I was so fascinated!

Man, this. I cannot *write* something I don't understand. Which doesn't mean I need to have a PhD in physics or whatever to write spaceships, but man - I can't even do slap-dash hand-wavy writing without *some* knowledge of a thing.

Yes, i research a lot, but I also really, *really* appreciate it in a fic when it's obvious the author tried to get things right (and really really really dislike it when it's just as obvious they're clueless and don't care).

If you don't mind me asking, how do you fit it into your writing? Do you research as you go or make notes and fill in the gaps later?

I research as I go. I have stalled out on something for a day or so because it took me a while to get the research I needed. I just...cannot keep writing with a (fill in later) spot or anything.

When i wrote a *very* long in!space! fic, omg, the research and reading! Heh. I'm not terribly science-minded, so it was a bit difficult.

If you're interested (and because some people were), I posted a list of all the bookmarks I'd made for that fic, of all the things I researched/read about to make sure I was coming anywhere near 'real' science.

Wow! That's a lot of reading :) kudos to you. I often find it disrupts my flow if I try and research at the same time (or I fall into a Wikipedia blackhole and resurface reading something random like about ancient trackways of Asia).

Bwaaaaaahahahaha!
Yeah, it *is* a danger.

But mostly, when I'm really in the groove, the research just spurs me on and makes me excited about how/what I'm going to write.

late reply, but seriously, this! i'm currently in an alternate universe historical rp and i've spent many nights researching the temperature in england in the 1920s to make sure my posts follow the weather patterns of the day. most people wouldn't worry about this but i love being as accurate as i can.

YES! Omg, I do the same thing. Takes place in X city/town/country? What sort of plants might be around, what sort of flowers, do they have fireflies? What is the temp like in the day, in the night, when is it stormy, when is it cold.....

Old Farmer's Almanac has *awesome* historical data for the US going back almost a hundred years, I think. The exact temps on the exact day....

I've actually used to say 'it was raining the day so and so was born' or whatever. :D

*high fives*

I'm happy as long as it sounds somewhat believable within the universe of the fic.

- If canon does things in a way they wouldn't actually work in real life and the fic copies that? It's fine.

- If the fic is an extreme AU with no basis in reality and the author decides to go wild and make up stuff? I'll accept it.

- If an author writes the Harry Potter characters celebrating Thanksgiving because they couldn't be bothered to do a quick google search? You better believe I'm hitting that back button and reading something else.

(and yes, that last one is based on a real fic)

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
To me doing research is part of the fun of using historical settings and fantasy settings I didn't create! (And a great way to procrastinate writing the actual fic...)

BUT THE WORST CASE OF THIS is settings in a different country from where the author is from and they MAKE NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER to do the bare fucking minimum to try and make it seem like it's a different culture and that they respect that.

ANIME/MANGA FANDOM I'M FUCKING LOOKING AT YOU BIIIIIIIIIIIITCH.
