a lot of RPF make me think of that one woman from misery and that level of crazy. There are probably normal people out there who can tell the difference between reality and their own imposed fiction - but they sure as fuck do not show up on the internet.

This annoys me because I love RPF and I'm not a massive weirdo. I'm not angry with you personally, but it's just such an annoying stereotype that we are all like that. I see posts from RPF fans which make me mega cringe. I just write it because I like it and I find it sexy. I'd like to think I'm not one of those dreadful people.

OP here. I get that you are replying to the post before, but just want to be clear that I don't think people who write/read RPF are massive weirdos.

+1

Yup, same.

well you don't see it so how would you know this sounds like you put all rpf shipper in a box when you don't know anything about it

Hey can I ask? Hand on heart? If a total stranger on the internet said that they wrote fanfiction about you and everything they could find out about you through social media or just straight up stalked you to get ideas for their writing material, would you be comfortable about it?
What if they wrote about you being 'shipped' with someone you would never sleep with? someone close to you 'which you have the perfect chemistry uwu'? You would be cool with it? It wouldn't be creepy? And if it did make you uncomfortable and you asked people to stop but they didn't - that would be ok because why would your opinion matter when someone else's enjoyment is at stake?

I wish i didn't know about this shit. trust me I miss the days I was ignorant and unknowing about this whole horrific side that got worse once people took advantage of social media. Feel free to blame Tumblr for only seeing the rancid side to RPF.

nayrt

I think something you're missing here is that reasonable RPF-ers agree that no one should be telling the subject of RPF about it let alone showing it to them. I don't RPF but I also don't have a problem with it, and I agree that it would be creepy to be let in on the joke, so to speak. That's why the number one rule for RPF should always be keep it away from the people it's about.

That being said, for a lot of celebrities, their privacy is being invaded to the level you describe above even if the fans aren't trying to write fic or fantasize about their relationships with their co-workers/friends. That's not to say that kind of behavior is okay, but getting rid of RPF won't suddenly make fans at large start respecting celebrity privacy when this is an issue that runs to the very core of celebrity culture.

Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Would you argue that people who aren't into fanfiction could say the same about that? It's "a level of crazy" just because they see the worst of examples?
Newsflash, the majority of people who ship RPF sure as hell do know the difference between fantasy and reality. The word you're looking for is 'tinhatter'.

lol ok hun.

Right? This weirdo assumption that anyone that writes RPF is 100 percent digging into people's trash for stuff and running around after them at cons waving copies of their erotic fic and etc. is just....wth.

That's how a lot of non-fandom sees fandom as a *whole*, and most people would find that pretty fucking insulting.
