a lot of RPF make me think of that one woman from misery and that level of crazy. There are probably normal people out there who can tell the difference between reality and their own imposed fiction - but they sure as fuck do not show up on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This annoys me because I love RPF and I'm not a massive weirdo. I'm not angry with you personally, but it's just such an annoying stereotype that we are all like that. I see posts from RPF fans which make me mega cringe. I just write it because I like it and I find it sexy. I'd like to think I'm not one of those dreadful people.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-22 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I get that you are replying to the post before, but just want to be clear that I don't think people who write/read RPF are massive weirdos.

+1

Yup, same.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
well you don't see it so how would you know this sounds like you put all rpf shipper in a box when you don't know anything about it

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hey can I ask? Hand on heart? If a total stranger on the internet said that they wrote fanfiction about you and everything they could find out about you through social media or just straight up stalked you to get ideas for their writing material, would you be comfortable about it?
What if they wrote about you being 'shipped' with someone you would never sleep with? someone close to you 'which you have the perfect chemistry uwu'? You would be cool with it? It wouldn't be creepy? And if it did make you uncomfortable and you asked people to stop but they didn't - that would be ok because why would your opinion matter when someone else's enjoyment is at stake?

I wish i didn't know about this shit. trust me I miss the days I was ignorant and unknowing about this whole horrific side that got worse once people took advantage of social media. Feel free to blame Tumblr for only seeing the rancid side to RPF.

I think something you're missing here is that reasonable RPF-ers agree that no one should be telling the subject of RPF about it let alone showing it to them. I don't RPF but I also don't have a problem with it, and I agree that it would be creepy to be let in on the joke, so to speak. That's why the number one rule for RPF should always be keep it away from the people it's about.

That being said, for a lot of celebrities, their privacy is being invaded to the level you describe above even if the fans aren't trying to write fic or fantasize about their relationships with their co-workers/friends. That's not to say that kind of behavior is okay, but getting rid of RPF won't suddenly make fans at large start respecting celebrity privacy when this is an issue that runs to the very core of celebrity culture.

Would you argue that people who aren't into fanfiction could say the same about that? It's "a level of crazy" just because they see the worst of examples?
Newsflash, the majority of people who ship RPF sure as hell do know the difference between fantasy and reality. The word you're looking for is 'tinhatter'.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
lol ok hun.

Right? This weirdo assumption that anyone that writes RPF is 100 percent digging into people's trash for stuff and running around after them at cons waving copies of their erotic fic and etc. is just....wth.

That's how a lot of non-fandom sees fandom as a *whole*, and most people would find that pretty fucking insulting.

I have a question.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you feel about professional media about real people? The based on or inspired by real life events, using actual names and likenesses - The Social Network, Hidden Figures, 12 Years a Slave, Walk the Line, Apollo 13, Titanic, The King's Speech, The Impossible, J. Edgar, Band of Brothers, From Earth to the Moon, Monster, Boys Don't Cry, Zodiac, Psycho, The Queen, United 93, Bombshell, Harriet, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Fosse/Verdon, Chernobyl, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Judy, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, The Post, Battle of the Sexes, I,Tonya, All the Money in the World, The Greatest Showman, Detroit, Darkest Hour, Hacksaw Ridge, The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Race, Joy, The Danish Girl - just to name a fraction of what is out there.

Some, of course, are more accurate or have less dramatic license taken, but I guarantee at least something included is speculation or didn't happen at all in each. Sometimes an effort is made to be respectful, but often they just want to tell an interesting story.

Re: I have a question.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-22 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
most of these aren't heavily eroticized pieces of fiction, they're often bio-pics detailing a person's life and achievements, not 20k porn about them getting it on with a co-worker that isn't 'canon'.

this argument is and always will be a complete false equivalence, and you can justify your want to write RPF with a simple 'bc i want to' instead of trying to act like PG movies about someone's life is at all the same thing. it isn't.

Re: I have a question.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I think you're making false equivalence yourself in thinking all RPF is porn. Sure a lot of fic is shipping and a good amount of that includes explicit or mature sexual situations, but not all of it.

And I can say there absolutely have been movies/TV shows based on real people with speculative or wholly fabricated romances.

Re: I have a question.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect that the percentage of RPF that does not include explicit fucking is slightly smaller than the percentage that does include mpreg. But whatever. If it makes you feel better, your RPF A/B/O AU is exactly the same as The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Not OP, but I have an intense issue with shows like these. They're literally RPF in the way that the misconstrue/completely fictionalize events for the sake of enjoyment/ratings. The Versace show was a constant commercial when I was watching a show on demand (so I couldn't fast forward) and it pissed me off so much since it's OTT fake and the fact is that people see and watch it and think its real. It's actually worse than RPF because they aren't even using the disclaimer of calling it fiction, and the tiny 'base on events that happened kinda' to avoid being sued just makes it worse.

Like nothing makes me more pissed than that stupid 'Feud' show, or whatever it's called because it's 100% fake. Olivia De Havilland literally filed a lawsuit against it because of how bullshit it was, like they didn't just take advantage that these famous people we're dead so they couldn't say anything, they went as far as to slander still living legends because they could get away with it, and you know what? They fucking did, like fuck them!

"On June 30, 2017, a day before her 101st birthday, actress Olivia de Havilland filed a lawsuit against Feud: Bette and Joan for inaccurately portraying her and using her likeness without permission.[53] The lawsuit stated that the pseudo-documentary-style of the series leads viewers to believe that the statements made by the actress portraying de Havilland in the show are accurate, but that in fact de Havilland had not said such things in real life.[54] The various defendants filed a motion to dismiss under California's "anti-SLAPP" law. The trial court denied the motion but, on March 26, 2018, the California Court of Appeal, Second District, reversed the decision and ordered the lawsuit dismissed on the grounds that no person can "own history". The Court of Appeal further ruled the defendants were entitled to be reimbursed their attorneys' fees.[55] De Havilland filed for estoppels to pursue action with higher courts, securing a restraining order against Murphy and the production company from airing Feud until further review and a court date with the United States Supreme Court. In January 2019, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.[56]"

OP...

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
...is this about Tom Holland? Or is Domnhall Gleeson? Whoever played Christopher Robbin or something in the last Winnie the Pooh remake?

I only read RPF early in my fandom "career", and I guess since it was so outlandish, and I didn't really know much about the celebrity (or I guess I did, about as much as any fan would sort of...)it was easier to pretend/believe that this wasn't actually Person X. How could I possibly know what Person X was like? I know Person X certainly wouldn't be unfaithful to his partner, so already I know this is a bogus story. Most times I felt like the rpf fic I did read was more of an amalgamation of different characters the actor played rather than the accurate portrayal of the actor himself (this was in the early days of you tube, around 2005/2006, and I believe the fic was written in 2003 or 2004?). Point being, I don't really like RPF for similar reasons to you -- and besides, it always just feels like I'm reading a fantasy, an AU of 3 characters as one, with a few nods to interviews (traits, tics, figure of speech used, etc.)

I just came here to guess the person starring in your rpf...

"Yes, the picture is a hint."

You're a fan of Xi Jinping?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-23 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It does feel like any other series to me. There are even seasons. Season one would be around when they debuted, each season could be about 2-8 years. There are periods I like and periods I completely don't care for. Some people I only liked at certain ages (aka certain seasons) so I focus on those eras.

None of this has anything to do with the real people, except for selling their personas to the world in the first place. Especially Asian pop idols--characteristics are enforced (the smart one! the cute one! the hot one! the silent type! etc) and sold as part of the package, as are fanservice. They know what they're selling.

Unrelated to RPF but I have also read So. MUCH. Fic. While locked down that I never would have.

Like, holy shit ya'll I read the most romantic age play fic and now I'm rethinking my LIFE I'm a mess.
