well i am in the spn fandom and most shipper of rpf shippers don't do this maybe on tumblr they do this but most keep to the fandom bubble and who are you to judge really when the cast think its funny and have mentioned it . every fandom has crazy shippers not just rpf and you are allowed to think what you want i feel if you keep it in fandom most don't go sharing like you think they do i know i write rpf fics for myself i am not sharing it with the cast but this just seems like you cast judgement on people . fandom is not just one thing and you sound like writing rpf fanfic is a crime if your not flaunting it and showing it around there is no problem be respectful of them. most fandoms know that and learn with age. if its not effecting you ,why care so much ?

This!
I'm always intrigued how angry people get about RPF when it occurs all the time outside fiction, as someone mentioned above with "The Crown". I'd argue any film or tv series about a still living human being is technically RPF. Supernatural itself had an episode that was the brothers going into another world with the actors from Supernatural. They killed off Misha Collins in that episode (as in he plays an actor on the set of Supernatural called Misha Collins. And he apparently says it's one of his faves.
As long as people aren't shoving their rpf into the actor's faces I don't see the problem here.

Also, I'm going to assume that the people writing the RPF don't know the people they're writing about and hence it is clearly fiction. They are taking the public image of the person and writing the fiction from that.

ayrt

I do judge people who actively invest themselves in RPF, tbh. I avoid it as much as I can, and the only time I don't is when it's mentioned on here. My problem with it is that we're dealing with real people, whos personal lives are no one's business but their own. Of course there are crazy fans in every fandom, but RPF is objectively the only case where the fallout can and will cause problems for the people they involve. It's different when fans embarrass themselves on Twitter asking Neil Gaiman about his characters because there is still a break where fiction and reality can be separated. Even if it's just one person, going out of their way to harass an actor, calling their family fake/beards/whatever because they cant tell the difference between the character and the actor/don't want too, it's still one person too many.
Technically this has affected me, I was close to two guys from high school who had their friendship ruined because some girls got creepy and decide to 'ship' them. I've seen people get laughed at for saying they were 'saving themselves' for a fictional character. The difference is that you can do something to yourself all you want, but letting your lack of personal boundary ruin the life of somebody else is just a shitty thing to do. That's why I care so much.
