I have a huge issue with RPF. It's a huge violation to privacy and personal boundaries especially since 99% of the time all their 'characterization' is based on inaccurate fantasies and false drama. These are real people and if you do not know them personally then don't pretend you know about them or their relationships, and if you do know them personally it's a creepy thing to do to have fantasies about your friends regardless.
I just don't see it as a live and let live thing either, simply because these are /real/ people, not fictional. Most of the time RPF shippers (that I've seen) go out of their way to let their ship know just how gay/in love they are with their co-star/bandmate. They seem to be the worst type of fan in that regard because a lot of what I've seen is that they actually believe there's something going on behind closed doors. Like you see what happened with the Supernatural fandom, it's literal harassment.

How do you feel about shows like The Queen, etc? I know some people don't mind most mainstream RPF if it's about dead people and there's a GREAT deal of dramatic license, but the queen is literally still alive and probably watching it at the palace IRL.

NAYRT but it's... there are some lines where I feel like it's different? Mainstream RPF tends to be about events and persons of some historical import-- even if that historical import is cultural or pop-cultural rather than political. There is sometimes speculation about private lives, which is not so different from RPF that regular people write on the internet... but there's also...

I mean 'oversight' isn't exactly the word I want, but there are people who consult on things or make arrangements with living historical figures or the estates of dead ones, or the story is about an EVENT and I can accept some filling in of gaps in well-documented things.

And sometimes those shows or films will be gross and exploitative-- and if mainstream RPF is disrespectful I think that's a lot worse than a group of young women sharing stories amongst themselves (though the fans who shove it at the people they're writing about or make them uncomfortable with speculation, like... that's not cool).

But I mean, Citizen Kane was RPF with the serial numbers filed off, and if Hearst hadn't made such a stink over it, it might not have gained the fame that led to its place in cinema history today. So who am I to judge I guess?

I hate, hate, hate them! They're honestly worse than casual RPF done by fans because they literally exist to slander and make a profit off of someone who literally cannot say anything dead or alive because in a literal lawsuit between Olivia de Havilland (at age 101) and the TV shitshow 'Feud' even when a show complete fictionalizes you there's nothing you can do because someone can't, and I quote "own history" even though it's her fucking life they're lying about! Seriously it's completely disgusting to me that people get away with this, to make money off of it. That people actually believe what they see on TV because hiding behind a 'based on' apparently means more than the truth. They pretend it's true, at least RPF fans have 'fiction' in their name base...

^ in the secret below someone mentioned shows like this, and I left a bigger rant there, figured I should share it here?

well i am in the spn fandom and most shipper of rpf shippers don't do this maybe on tumblr they do this but most keep to the fandom bubble and who are you to judge really when the cast think its funny and have mentioned it . every fandom has crazy shippers not just rpf and you are allowed to think what you want i feel if you keep it in fandom most don't go sharing like you think they do i know i write rpf fics for myself i am not sharing it with the cast but this just seems like you cast judgement on people . fandom is not just one thing and you sound like writing rpf fanfic is a crime if your not flaunting it and showing it around there is no problem be respectful of them. most fandoms know that and learn with age. if its not effecting you ,why care so much ?

This!
I'm always intrigued how angry people get about RPF when it occurs all the time outside fiction, as someone mentioned above with "The Crown". I'd argue any film or tv series about a still living human being is technically RPF. Supernatural itself had an episode that was the brothers going into another world with the actors from Supernatural. They killed off Misha Collins in that episode (as in he plays an actor on the set of Supernatural called Misha Collins. And he apparently says it's one of his faves.
As long as people aren't shoving their rpf into the actor's faces I don't see the problem here.

Also, I'm going to assume that the people writing the RPF don't know the people they're writing about and hence it is clearly fiction. They are taking the public image of the person and writing the fiction from that.

I do judge people who actively invest themselves in RPF, tbh. I avoid it as much as I can, and the only time I don't is when it's mentioned on here. My problem with it is that we're dealing with real people, whos personal lives are no one's business but their own. Of course there are crazy fans in every fandom, but RPF is objectively the only case where the fallout can and will cause problems for the people they involve. It's different when fans embarrass themselves on Twitter asking Neil Gaiman about his characters because there is still a break where fiction and reality can be separated. Even if it's just one person, going out of their way to harass an actor, calling their family fake/beards/whatever because they cant tell the difference between the character and the actor/don't want too, it's still one person too many.
Technically this has affected me, I was close to two guys from high school who had their friendship ruined because some girls got creepy and decide to 'ship' them. I've seen people get laughed at for saying they were 'saving themselves' for a fictional character. The difference is that you can do something to yourself all you want, but letting your lack of personal boundary ruin the life of somebody else is just a shitty thing to do. That's why I care so much.
