Crash diets can work for short-term weight loss if you need to lose 30 lbs quickly and don't need to keep it off (or I guess if you can transition into some other long-term-healthy pattern of eating and exercise). Don't work long-term at all unless you have insane amounts of willpower that the vast majority of people don't have, or basically get addicted to it in an unhealthy way. And exercise is important for health but has very little direct impact on weight-loss (because you run into the same kind of willpower and maintenance problems you run into with crash diets, basically). The best advice that I know of is, one, be really aggressive in portion control with foods that are high in fat or sugar or salt or any combination of the three and never overeat those foods; two, eat lots and lots of foods that don't have high amounts of fat/sugar/salt but high in protein, fiber and nutrients, especially vegetables, whole grains and meats.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)I know that I can't moderate my sweet tooth and just eat fewer sweets. Whatever I have in my apartment, I'm going to scarf down. But not buying any sweets at all works, and is somehow not even that hard.
Substituting snacks is a good trick, too. Eating nuts, grapes, carrots or whatever instead of sweets means I still get do that hand-to-mouth motion. Important: get something that you don't mind preparing. Nuts out of a bag are easy, carrots might need to be peeled and cut into sticks (that's what I do at least).
Making smaller portions is easiest when using new measuring utensils. Instead of measuring out less rice/noodles/... in the same container, I need to get a smaller container.
It was counter-intuitive at first, but eating (or starting to prepare a meal) before I'm hungry has helped. If I only get up and start cooking when I'm already hungry, I'll be more likely to pick something that's quick to make but less healthy/varied, and I'll be more likely to make too big a portion. Planning meals ahead instead of deciding on the spot helps, too.
I'm currently trying to eat more protein and less carbs. I made a big pot of red lentil chili yesterday. Before that, it was a big pot of Indian lentil soup. As long as I'm eating those leftovers, I'll eat fewer carbs.
Also I'm trying to start thinking about dieting meaning not just subtracting things. Sure, I should eat less unhealthy food; but I need to add exercise. Because in the end, that's what makes the difference for me. All the stuff above, I do mostly because I want to live generally healthy, but the only I time I really lost weight was when I went biking and swimming regularly.
