Ask questions or get advice

I know I KNOW diet and exercise and moderation are all best, but what diet plans actually work? I need to lose about 30 lbs. Atkins? Slimfast? Weight Watchers?

When I was trying to diet, Weight Watchers worked best for me because I could pick and choose my own food and actually eat real food. Basically I could control my own plan, it was more about portion control than anything else. I still actually use some of the things I learned, even though I don't actively follow anymore, and it is still helpful.

Thank you for your response. Was it expensive or a hassle?

It has been a few years since I've done it honestly, so I couldn't say. It wasn't so bad at the time.

One advantage with Weight Watchers is you don't have to buy their food. With some of the other diets, you have to eat only their food, so that will always cost more.

This is all based on my incredibly amateur understanding and research.

Weight Watchers is useful. Crash diets can work for short-term weight loss if you need to lose 30 lbs quickly and don't need to keep it off (or I guess if you can transition into some other long-term-healthy pattern of eating and exercise). Don't work long-term at all unless you have insane amounts of willpower that the vast majority of people don't have, or basically get addicted to it in an unhealthy way. And exercise is important for health but has very little direct impact on weight-loss (because you run into the same kind of willpower and maintenance problems you run into with crash diets, basically). The best advice that I know of is, one, be really aggressive in portion control with foods that are high in fat or sugar or salt or any combination of the three and never overeat those foods; two, eat lots and lots of foods that don't have high amounts of fat/sugar/salt but high in protein, fiber and nutrients, especially vegetables, whole grains and meats.

Hate to break it to you, but there are no diets that actually work. The only thing that actually works is completely overhauling your eating and exercise habits. Otherwise, once you stop dieting, you're going to go right back to the same bad habits you had before unless you make a complete lifestyle change.

That's what Weight Watchers teachers you how to do.

Then it isn't actually a diet, per se.

Atkins works very well for a short period - danger of gaining everythng back and more. Also watch for liver damage due to all the protein. But it works, I've done it.

The best diet is one you can stick to. A diet that tells you to eat a lot of broccoli is not going to work if you hate broccoli. Here are small-ish changes that work for me:

I know that I can't moderate my sweet tooth and just eat fewer sweets. Whatever I have in my apartment, I'm going to scarf down. But not buying any sweets at all works, and is somehow not even that hard.

Substituting snacks is a good trick, too. Eating nuts, grapes, carrots or whatever instead of sweets means I still get do that hand-to-mouth motion. Important: get something that you don't mind preparing. Nuts out of a bag are easy, carrots might need to be peeled and cut into sticks (that's what I do at least).

Making smaller portions is easiest when using new measuring utensils. Instead of measuring out less rice/noodles/... in the same container, I need to get a smaller container.

It was counter-intuitive at first, but eating (or starting to prepare a meal) before I'm hungry has helped. If I only get up and start cooking when I'm already hungry, I'll be more likely to pick something that's quick to make but less healthy/varied, and I'll be more likely to make too big a portion. Planning meals ahead instead of deciding on the spot helps, too.

I'm currently trying to eat more protein and less carbs. I made a big pot of red lentil chili yesterday. Before that, it was a big pot of Indian lentil soup. As long as I'm eating those leftovers, I'll eat fewer carbs.

Also I'm trying to start thinking about dieting meaning not just subtracting things. Sure, I should eat less unhealthy food; but I need to add exercise. Because in the end, that's what makes the difference for me. All the stuff above, I do mostly because I want to live generally healthy, but the only I time I really lost weight was when I went biking and swimming regularly.

Good luck!

A tweet got RT'd on my timeline today that's really clearly from one of my coworkers (uses real name on the account, has pictures, etc). Should I mention this to her? And if so, how should I broach the subject? For more context, the tweet I saw was from a fandom nerdy thing, we're both very nerdy although there's a generation gap thing (she's about 6 years younger than me) and in different fandoms generally.

If she's younger, I'd lean towards guessing she chose to use her own name on social media for a reason, so it depends on whether you want to reach out and potentially gain a real life fandom friend in her? And if you want to reveal your own identity, although you can just say you looked into the retweet list. If you see the possibility of friendship, I don't see why not.

(Not that all older people are less tech-savvy, but there's always the possibility that not everyone knows that retweets can be seen, or someone else helped make their account, etc. Don't see a high chance of that happening here, although it's still possible it's a mistake and they meant to do it on a fandom-only Twitter account.)

Uh, I guess it depends why you're asking about broaching the subject? If it's about gaining a RL friend online, something like, "Hey Jane, are you [profile] therealjane on twitter? Something from that account showed up on my timeline and I didn't know you like GOT!"

Otherwise I am not sure what you would be reaching out to her for? If she's 6 years younger than you, I imagine she knows how Twitter works and that retweets end up thrown into the ether for everyone to see?

I'm looking into getting invisible braces. What brand should I go with? Anyone have experience with them?

Re: Advice / Questions Thread

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also looking at them but I can't find a doctor I trust. I can't have regular braces because of some enamel issues also I like the idea of taking them out to eat.

currently doing invisalign. pretty expensive but they're on the market the longest and have the most experience.
Also depends on a)how severely crooked are the teeth; b) how patient are you (it can range from 6 months to 2 years - regular braces might be quicker)
c) are you disciplined enough for a more extenaive dental care program daily (my tooth time went from 3 minutes to roughly 10 bc i want them squeaky clean, bc i am cavity paranoid)
d) around-care packages vary. with invisalign, my package includes a retainer for after the program to make sure it sticks. If theres a return to crooked teeth, i get new aligners for free if it happens up til 5 years after completing it. (costs a lil extra)

tldr: make sure to know what you want, what you are able to do and get at least two offers to compare.
I do NOT recommend "online ordering aligers" where you send in stuff or pictures yourself)
