Anime as a whole tends to be wildly transphobic, so it's not like this particular show stands out in that. One Piece and My Hero Academia have their own transphobic elements, and it's not like those want for popularity in any way.
Honestly, anime that depict trans people in any way that isn't weird and gross and often predatory are rare enough that it's remarkable when one comes along.
I think a lot of anime fans in the west sort of blind themselves to that, though.

Because they project themselves unto those traps, that's why. No time to be offended when you're imagining yourself as a sexy cat girl.

I thought the portrayal in Tokyo Godfathers was interesting and largely sympathetic

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm unfamiliar with this anime. What's transphobic about it?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's called Carole and Tuesday, but that's all I know.
Oh, there was a clip making the rounds of a group of singers that appear in it that are pretty standard "okama" types, that might be what they're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Okama bars are essentially just gay bars, and some of the comedic use of them in media tends to lean towards drag than actual representation of transsexuality. Like I don't know all the details, but there's definitely a gap in culture some people seem to like to gloss over for the sake of yelling.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt - I know, but that's the only thing I know of that might fit the bill. There could well be something else in the show that's transphobic, but that's a bit that people who aren't already watching might be familiar with, and might therefore have been put off by.

Yeah, sorry! I had a whole different thing lined up to say, but filed it down to that. I realized after I posted it that I should have made my own comment, but it was too little too late...

The singers state before their act that they're neither men nor women but a "new gender" (I think that's what they call it). I don't think that part made it into most of the clips, but if you've seen the show they're not just "okama." People also didn't like that they reacted with violence to the bad reception of their act because there's a stereotype of trans people being secretly violent.

I would guess from the title that it's not very accurate, unless they're using "LGBTQA" to mean just the "T" part. The other queer representation that was there was good. If they have a problem with the predatory lesbian stalker, I think that's bullshit because there was also a healthy lesbian couple and a predatory straight stalker, so there's no implication that all lesbians and only lesbians are predatory.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's all about the T now. If you want to talk about anything L, you need to find exclusively L spaces. And I mean exclusively L spaces. Not 99% of the ones we had which are now run by Ts where you will get death and rape threats for wanting to talk about anything L that doesn't center Ts.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Shut the fuck up. Signed, an "exclusive" L.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is a specific discussion. Speaking as an L, fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Shut up, TERF.

Go fuck yourself, terf.

I can't say I'm shocked that all the replies to this comment about lesbians getting threats for wanting cis lesbian spaces are aggressive. Strange how they kind of confirmed what the OC was saying.

Yeah. No surprises.

I got banned from a community for lesbians for starting a conversation about how hard it is to get good reproductive health care when all our options revolve around pregnancy prevention and not actually alleviating issues with irregular and painful periods, and how quickly you're dismissed from even getting those options if you aren't having sex with men.

From the replies: Women's health is transphobic now. Referring to myself as a woman is transphobic and I must call myself a uterus owner. Implying that there are women who do not have PIV sex is transphobic. Discussing periods is transphobic. Being negative about periods is harming people who wish they could have periods. I deserve to be raped and get the wall for causing suicide because transgender people kill themselves because of lesbians who use invalidating language. I am scum. I am a murderer. Etc, etc.

I was curious to see if gay men have to deal with similar reactions to talking about men's health. Searched their entire community, even searched the term FTM and only found people stating that their sexual preference was men, not FTM. No one was accused of being transphobic, no one was told to change their language about their own bodies, no one was told they had a genital fetish and needed to try harder.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes dear, I'm sure you got banned for using the phrase "women's health" and not for the extremely hostile and transphobic attitude you displayed when they asked you politely to use a more inclusive term.

Meanwhile I would love to find a lesbian space that doesn't constantly have to defend itself against asshats like you. Funny how the world is when you look outside your twittersphere, huh.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Gonna ignore that it's cis lesbians telling you you're an idiot, huh

Eh, I think that author makes some decent points but I'm not sure they watched the series to the end? Dahlia's presentation may be problematic but I feel like this one runs way too close to 'because this character is queer they must have no faults' -- she's the classic stage mom representation and it's shown very clearly at the end that despite everything Angela still loved her. And as for Desmond and the whole 'shows up only to die' thing...again, they might want to rewatch that last episode.

And if you're going to complain about how 'all trans characters are presented as violent' it's worth noting that *a lot* of characters in the anime show violent tendencies. Yes, Tuesday gets a lesbian stalker...but Angela gets a male stalker, and there isn't really any major het romance in the series to counteract that either. The Mermaid Sisters threaten to attack the judges sure, but this is also the series where the girls meet their producer when he comes running at them with an axe telling them to stop playing their 'shit music.' I just don't buy that the queer characters are treated any differently or worse than the rest of the cast.

Your point is well articulated, it's too bad a lot of people (not on here , but in general) can't see past their white-knighting to be able to differentiate between a nuanced opinion and actual bigotry.
