It is relatable to me. I'm not a morning person, I have insomnia, and I don't function well before 10 am without coffee.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel like those people would be more like ughhh don't talk to me until I've had my coffee and grumpy and tired, rather than omgggg I neeed coffee I can't live without it!!! like OP's post suggests.

The former seems realistic and doesn't bug me. Plenty of people aren't morning people. The latter type, I agree with OP are kinda annoying. I find it annoying IRL too, though. And it's usually people who are exaggerating for attention. Like calm down Sharon, you won't die without your Starbucks

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess, yes, I am more like, don't talk to me until I drink this coffee here.

Is the secret meaning characters specifically being excited about coffee? Because I read it more as a thematic thing where the OP was annoyed at characters who frequently can't function without coffee.

As a non-morning person who loves coffee, I second this. I won't be happy, but I'll live, and I have no desire for a stupid mug about it.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-26 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, same. I'm a night person who works a 9-5, if I don't have my coffee in the morning I literally can't function because my body just plain does not want to be awake before 11 AM no matter what I do.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree. I mean, I think it's a boring topic IRL, too.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-26 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
Saaaaaame. Maybe because I don't drink coffee at all, but it's so boring.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It feels very nostalgic to me. Like, I think there was a time when that was an original and fresh thing to say, and it feels very comfortable and homey to me now even though it's not very original or interesting.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
same
it's a fanfic tradition.

I HATE coffee. I'm an English cliche in that tea is my thing and I've really tried to get into coffee but the taste is just...not great to me. I wish it wasn't such a cultural expectation that all adults, fictional or otherwise, can't manage without coffee. I manage fine and don't expect everyone to love tea regardless of national stereotypes. So needless to say I hate British based fanfic that overplays the tea hand as well.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very much one of those, "No talkie before coffee", kind of people, but it's annoying when it's overused.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't relate because coffee does absolutely nothing to me, it's exactly like drinking water, so it just vaguely annoys me because as someone who is very much not a morning person it reminds me of how much I wish it did.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this. The only thing coffee sometimes does is keeps me from falling asleep when I'm actually trying to sleep. It doesn't make me feel any better or more energetic, though.

Have you tried energy drinks, anon? Real energy drinks with both caffeine and taurine in them, I mean. They're not some kind of miracle fix for me, but if I drink one when I'm feeling like death warmed over, in 40 min or so my exhaustion has usually abated to a level where it's at least manageable.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll give those a try. Thanks!

Particularly for those of us who can't understand why people willingly drink it

Homg, yes. Coffee is disgusting. I've tried it: black, with sugar, with cream, with flavored syrups, with freakin' the kitchen sink. It. Is. Gross.

Tea is also gross.

Gimme juice or gimme...juice!

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't particularly enjoy the taste of coffee (I'm too lazy to drink it as anything other than black), but as someone who's been drinking coffee since their early teens...

Dude.
You couldn't pay me to not drink it. I absolutely cannot function without it in the morning. The rest of the day I'm fine, but if I don't get my morning coffee I feel like I'm hungover and I've been partying till 5 AM when I haven't. It's that bad.

I really dislike the taste of coffee but I do have a few scenes revolving around coffee drinking in my House fics because I used to work in a doctor's office and they were all coffee junkies. I used to be the one who would go get them their Peet's all the time (there was a Peet's in the next block). I prefer tea. I'm a total tea junkie. If I believed in reincarnation I would swear I was either Asian or British in a past life.

I think any little personal quirk like that has the potential to become extremely annoying when used as a running gag for a character. You've got to have a good handle on comedy to make a running gag work. Too many people think 'running gag' means 'ad infinitum, even in places were it doesn't work' and it absolutely doesn't.

Personally yeah I do find the 'omg can't function with cooffeeeee' thing really grating both IRL and in fictional characters, because in my mind it symbolizes a dysfunctional society, but that's me projecting a lot of stuff onto one little thing so that's my own issue :p.

THIS this this this. Sure, *some* people are like that, sometimes, but OMG.
I hate it so much.

Also - i guess - i hate coffee and tea both, don't drink them *ever*. I have a little glass of juice in the morning. And I am *not* a 'morning person' - i hate loud noises and loud people in the morning, I don't like to be rushed.

BUT - when, for instance, my alarm didn't go off and I had to get up and get ready for work and leave the house in 20 minutes? I could still do it, and went on to have a perfectly normal day.

I don't get the 'i can't function without' thing, because if you *really can't*, then you're so fucked in an emergency, and that is baffling to me. Or the zombie apocalypse, pick one.

As I understand it coffee doesn't actually do anything to make someone more energetic or awake. It just blocks the chemicals that signal you're tired. As someone who drinks coffee all the time (literally all the time) the only real side-effect if I don't have my morning coffee is a headache. It's like withdrawal...which is probably a sign I should wean myself off a bit.

Personally I think it's less about the coffee though and more about a particular persons rituals. We all have those little things we do to wake up or get ready for bed or for anything but for some reason with coffee people think there's something innate about it that does the waking up even though many teas that have caffeine could do it if that was the case but I don't hear anyone talking about "I can't wake up without having some tea!"

Oh, definite caffeine withdrawal - i loved how they actually made that part of the plot going forward in Stargate: Universe. People having headaches and being twitchy because they hand no real supplies, etc., so no coffee, no tea, no soda....

Agree, definitely a ritual thing, and i know i am in a *bad* mood for a bit if i'm woken up by a loud radio or tv, or lots of people in the house being loud. I just get baffled by the 'i can't function' crowd. That just seems...extreme.

I'm a coffee person. I drink it all the time, not just in the morning. And yeah, this cliche is really annoying. It's like when people take that one off-hand comment about a character happening to like x and then try to turn that into the character's entire personality. It's just so overdone. How about instead of it being a cliche line of dialogue just SHOW the character drinking coffee often (particularly in the morning and being a bit irritable before they've really woken up).

Having your character say cliche lines a Facebook mom would put on her timeline isn't characterization.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-26 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't necessarily mind it if that's one small aspect of the person. It's when it becomes their personality that it's annoying. I have a hard enough time escaping the "Coffee = Life" memes on Facebook. I don't need it in my fandoms either.
