It's not about it being illegal. I've already said about the definition of paedophilia. I'm not from the US, so while we do have an age of consent, we don't have statutory rape in quite the same sense you do in the US. Perhaps that's why we're so much more crazy over 'pedos'.

I get that it's meant as a joke, and I'm not waving a dictionary around and bashing heads with it, but this pedo thing is everywhere and I've just got sick of it, because every time I see it I wince. If I hear the word or similar in RL it's never, ever a joke. You can call your mate a fag all you want but call him a pedo and you're looking for a broken nose, and I haven't, so far, been able to make the transition from 'RL talk' to 'internet talk' over the issue. And I don't think I ever will.

So I carry on wincing, and not saying anything, but I felt like getting a bit of weight off my chest so I made a secret.

Really, since "paedophile" is such a horrible thing to accuse someone of, I'd just as soon stay away from the word when it doesn't apply. And yeah, if the characters aren't prepubescent, it's simply using the word wrongly.

Not to mention that the age of consent is different in different parts of the world.

Yeah, I've been wondering about that; if "furry" is only people who like to have sex in fursuits, what are the people who merely enjoy anthro art? I'm sure those people are pretty fed up with being included in the former group.

"Rapist" "sadist" or "zoophile" are generally used in situations where it isn't really correct? I'm not sure how you could mistake any of those things (though I thought the same about paedophilia).

Well, it's less of a "everyone does it wrong so I will too!" than "this is what the law states a pedophile is, and I am using the legal term as opposed to the psychiatric term."

That's like saying anyone agnostic or atheist or non-christian/whathaveyou saying they're "married" is WRONG as marriage is an inherently religious thing. People who are married are married according to the law. People who are pedophiles can be pedophiles according to the law.

It's not a BAD THING either. The only reason it would be bad is that you're breaking the law. Ephobephilia, believe it or not, isn't a paraphilia like pedophilia is, psychologists consider being attracted to teenagers is normal except in cases where the person is obsessed with teenagers.

So no, the person can't be a pedo if the person in question is not 13 and under. Hell, 15 is legal in certain countries. Even in the great ol' USA have different age of consent and contingencies depending by state. Even in some states, you can marry a 14-year old as long as you have parental consent, as crazy as that shit is.
