I'm glad Fandom Secrets isn't really concerned with RuPaul's Drag Race because damn...talk about problematic. I love it though, and I don't want to feel guilty for watching it.

I'm glad it's not big here because I absolutely loathe it.

all right you're going to have to be specific about the problematic. I watch the show but I'm ambivalent about it general because I feel like the quality has gone down and the challenges are kind of terrible. plus the blatant way the wins/losses/lip syncs are manipulated so that Ru's favorites are pushed forward, it's really super obvious now not only how staged it is, for a reality show, but how Ru will just up and double-save, double-eliminate, or change the structure of the final to give her favorites the best chance at winning. it's *boring* as fuck. the Rusicals are awful.

but...I still watch it because it's drag queens being promoted in what passes for mainstream cable in 2020. we need to normalize things like that, and I'm here for the queens talking about their experiences with prejudice, hatred, fear, bad families, etc. just not here for the competition itself.

so what about that is problematic and guilt-worthy?

Massive transphobia is the glaring flaw; it is literally stipulated in the contract that even if they *are* trans, they either have to hide it and present as cis or just. Not be in the show. Go listen to what the trans queens (Carmen Carrera, Jiggly Caliente, Monica Beverly Hillz, etc.) have to say about it, and you see how gross it really got. Then there's the insane focus on fishy pageant queens, which is such an incredibly small portion of drag. That's alienating as well. You could argue that it's because RuPaul herself is all fish these days, but it's hypocritical considering that in her youth she was way more genderfucky. It's basically just... RuPaul is getting to be a classic boomer like the rest of them, he's just gay so he gets to claim he's not. He's judgmental in the bad way and closed-minded, and that absolutely reflects in the show. All that said, it's popular for a reason and there's no shame in enjoying it. It's junk food TV and that's fine. But it simply doesn't fall under the banner of progressive anymore. Which, again, is fine! Not everything has to be. But we've made steps since the show first started, and the show hasn't made those steps along with the rest. If you're interested in a more... accurate, I guess? Current? look at the drag community and what it's doing, I highly recommend Dragula. It's got something for everyone, and really lets queens, kings, and everything in between dig into the dirty-sexy-bad roots of the culture. I adore it.
