I sort of resent being made to feel as if I should watch New Thing* just because lots of other people are watching New Thing*. People watch things for a lot of reasons that don’t necessarily include the fact that New Thing* is actually good, like for the spectacle, to alleviate boredom, for completionism, because someone they know watched it, to review it, to hatewatch, to troll others with, etc. I don’t mind people recommending New Thing* to other people if they like it (as long as they’re not pushy about it), but the everybody-else-is-doing-it-so-you-should-too argument really grates.

Sure, sometimes I’ll look into New Thing* because it is suddenly all over the place, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to want to watch it. I have sometimes ended up watching or at least trying New Thing* (only after I decided I might like it or find it interesting), often after the fact due to my resistance to the idea that I must watch it.

*where New Thing = Outer Banks, Tiger King, The Mandalorian, The Joker, The Haunting of Hill House, Hereditary, Stranger Things, The Good Place, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Game of Thrones, MCU, Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Walking Dead, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community, whatever other media has become the zeitgeist in its time
