I hear so many stories like this and it boggles me every time. It's like, let me get this straight... you're high risk and/or you live with people who are high risk and who will likely get very, very sick and possibly die if they get COVID-19, but you want to go to Target/get a haircut/pig out at Cheesecake Factory soooooo fucking bad that this is SOMEHOW more important to you than the health of your loved ones? Really??

A lot of people are getting nasty shocks that their relatives/friends are incredibly selfish and inconsiderate and this pandemic brought the worst out.

Yup. And up until now my dad has been as annoyed as I have been with those people. But now that it is him, he suddenly can't see that he's doing the exact same thing. He's insisting he'll wear a mask and bring disinfectant spray, and so he's totally being careful enough and not at all like those other selfish people.

That's a big problem I see a lot of, too. Out of all the people who nominally support social distancing and being careful, there's a significant percentage who are just full of shit. They're paying lip service to the idea, but in real life, they don't think it REALLY applies if, for example, they want to go visit their grandkids two states away or get their nails done. Then they get offended because they're being responsible!! Why do you have a problem with this??!

Yup. Hopefully mom and I can talk him out of it before Monday.

Good luck with that. If it turns out that you can't, hopefully you can convince him to take more precautions, such as showering thoroughly and changing his clothes as soon as he gets home.

Yeah, I have coworkers visiting family, going on mini vacations, getting professional massages (hope they use hand sanitizer instead of oil) and I am terrified every time I have to take the bus to work.

I’d think going to the gym would be more dangerous than anything on that list except maybe pigging out at a restaurant, and even that might be less bad if it had a well spaced out outdoor seating area and you went by yourself or with housemates.

Like, go to Target, don’t dawdle, wear a mask, be nice to salespeople and keep six feet away from everyone, don’t try on clothes before buying, and don’t return or exchange anything.

Haircuts would be dangerous even with the hairdresser in their best ad-hoc hazmat gear, but if they limited chatter, you both wore masks, you had to wash your own hair before going, and they kept every possible door and window propped open, but not as bad as the gym.

Shared equipment, exertion leading to deep heavy breathing, usually at least a few hours a week... I get being frustrated with falling out of shape; there’s too many people out and about for me to walk for exercise while avoiding others and I’ve lost muscle and gained weight. But I think I’d rather get on an airplane than exercise in a traditional gym right now.

I completely agree. I'm trying to write down all the logical arguments so I can make my case to him thoroughly and hopefully convincingly.

There was a group of people that tested positive for COVID19 that ran around for a couple days in my country, and the only local transmission tracked down from that group is from a gym.

Even without proving it, just imagining people sweating, wiping their faces and then touching shared gym equipment...And masks aren't even 100% protection, but how many people can actually exercise properly with a mask on and the inability to breathe in as much oxygen as normal?

Re: Vent thread.

yeah you can't. I tried briefly once, this past week, now that it's finally warm enough to go outside. you just can't breathe heavily in a mask. exercise *needs* to be done away from other people or where you risk touching equipment, there's no alternative.

Agreed to basically all of this.

I don't get why it is so hard for some people to respect the six feet guideline. Like, fuck. Really?

I also relate to not walking anywhere because everyone on the planet has suddenly decided walking is their new favorite thing to go. I do have some weights and bands but my spine is so fucked up from being suddenly sedentary that my ankle is hurting again. I need to walk. I need to get used to walking, and for long distances. Can't afford a treadmill, can't use the apartment treadmill.
