I felt the same until I started to distance myself from the fandom (due to its general toxicity), and now... idk. Watching without that constant stream of "meta" about what certain colors mean or some split second of body language has made me realize that it isn't even halfway as insinuated as I really wanted to believe it was. It's really clear that the writers have been consistently writing Cas as a "third brother," not as a potential love interest.

I hate to say it so bluntly, but I really don't think you should hold your breath. If he survives, Dean will likely either be single or involved with a woman, and there really, honestly hasn't been any indication otherwise until you put on the "fangirl goggles."

Maybe I'm just still burned from other fandoms where the fans went absolutely mental over little clues about the main ship being set up to be canon, only for exactly none of it to come to fruition, but at this point I think it's more realistic to just assume it's not going to happen.

This isn't to say you shouldn't enjoy the ship! I absolutely still do, it's one of the strongest OTPs I've ever had. It just... won't be canon. And honestly, that isn't the end of the world.

I’d add that the the writers definitely lean into it because they know the fans are into it, but (a) they’re definitely never going to make it canon, and (b) it very rarely rises to the level of “queer-baiting” fandom often claims it does.

NB: Haven’t watched the show since maybe 2012 or 2013; only really shipped Dean and Cas in the early days when it was way more organic and weird (especially season 4...I love them in season 4).

Yeah, I stopped watching years ago and while I never expected it to be canon, I can totally believe that there would be a bit of hope if one was deep in fandom. I'm still fond of the ship and sometimes watch their scenes or look at their tag on tumblr and cringe at all those fans who are analysing every single glance and t-shirt color (and also show a general lack of knowledge about how writing/filming a tv show works).

This is definitely not a big case of "WTF is the fandom seeing there???" like Sterek was (seriously, after giving in to watching the show after people losing their minds about them forever I was SO confused), but it's also not OBVIOUS OMG as fandom loves to think.

all of this.

enjoy the ship as it stands is fine, go for it and have fun. but expecting it to be canon is not a hill anyone should be dying on since it was never going to go that way ever.

it's something i'd love to tell more fandoms tbh: enjoy your ship but don't get angry when it doesn't happen when that was never in the cards, and no: you liking a ship does not mean you're owed it happening in the canon.

This.

I actually love that kind of ridiculously detailed, tin-hat, out there ship meta, but only when I don't ship it (but am still familiar with the media, so that's a nope to Supernatural since I've never watched it) or mentally prepared myself not to get sucked in by it. When you aren't taking it seriously, it's very entertaining.
