Considering how awful some musical episodes on some tv shows ended up being, going to have to disagree. Some shows can pull it off, and some shows can't.

I agree. I don't care if it's corny, I love it when shows randomly do this.

Hard disagree. If it can be done in an organic way within the universe of the show, sure. Not otherwise. Plus, too many of them would just destroy the appeal. Already they are starting to feel overdone and cheap-gimmicky.

I agree. I kind of wish Supernatural had gone all-in on the concept at some point. X-Files too.

HARD agree, I love musical episodes.

I'm always sad when I watch a show where I know someone in the cast can sing/dance and there's no musical episode. And Chicago Hope didn't do one until after they lost Mandy Patinkin, iirc.

The show Tenspeed and Brown Shoe ran for fourteen episodes in 1980 and it's a CRIME that they didn't have a musical episode tbh because the leads would have killed it, and it could have been an undercover gig type thing instead of a fantasy musical episode.

It depends on the show, but I'd love to see all shows have at least a musical dance sequence if not a whole musical episode.

I don't know.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I started laughing when the started singing for the Grey's Anatomy episode because it seemed so absurd. Some of them could really sing, but damn it was so weird and out of place. And this is a show that had had hallucinatory ghost sex and a place between life and death to talk to dead people.

I'd say if they can find a good way to incorporate it into the show, then go for it, otherwise, really not the best idea.

I absolutely hate it when characters start singing, especially if it's not in character for them to be a trained singer which, let's face it, is 99% of characters outside theatre-based fandoms.

Buffy (not the musical episode, the one with Giles and guitar), Leverage (the country music episode), Person of Interest (at least it was meant to be funny, even though it wasn't), Veronica Mars...no.

The Xena musical episode was SO good. It came at one of the the darkest points in the series as well, so it was a pretty brave choice.

Chernobyl: the musical

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if Mad Men can do it... Why not?
Granted, it was only a small sequence instead of an entire episode, but it fit in perfectly.

Do It Anyway just made me think of this.

I also love musical episodes or even random song and dance numbers. Have you seen Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Eli Stone or Moonlighting (which was created by the same showrunner as Bull. I too loved the Bull musical number but it didn't surprise me knowing who was behind the show). I loved all three of those shows for not taking themselves to seriously and not being afraid of random singing and dancing.
