I hear this is getting a sequel with the next generation. It’s still unclear who had sex with who in order to make the kids, and Fiction is Not Reality has been having lots of fun with the age-gap possibilities.

is this for real?

Like the offspring or a remake?

Hmm . . . This article says one of the characters has a confirmed mother and father. Not sure what FiNR was talking about. Maybe one of the others is uncertain? (The only thing I know about Inuyasha is that VG Cats called it Dragonball Z for girls.)

In real life, regular ass couples with larger age differences make me uncomfortable. For some reason though, that rarely translates to fandom. I've shipped huge age differences, I've written fanfic, etc, basically gone all in lol.

But then, Bunny Drop exists and I was absolutely disgusted by that series, so I guess I do have standards. Also GOD that was gross. Even worse every dude I know supports that ending and just, URGH.

Oh god Bunny Drop. D:

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
At least when the Usagi Drop anime was still airing, I remember how pretty much all the 4chan threads condemned the manga ending. A lot people felt betrayed since the main draw of the show was its wholesomeness.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The feeling of betrayal was a huge part. Like, if it sold itself as a child-wife fantasy, I'd most likely be like, ew, but whatever, people can dream. But when it sells itself as a wholesome story and then even tries to RATIONALIZE its ending...no, just, no.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I never finished reading the manga because the library didn't get any volumes after Rin grows up. I wonder if somebody at the library read how it ended and decided, "Nope, let's stop it here". At least the anime doesn't go there. I've never met anybody, male or female, who thought the direction the manga went was anything but gross.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Urgh, be glad you aren't in the Asian fandom, then. Every dude here "naturally" supports it and thinks anyone who doesn't is a SJW or "oversensitive" and I hate humans.

Ohhhh Bunny Drop. That came out after Yotsuba and a little after a third “bachelor adopts little girl” manga (don’t remember name, but from what I remember it was closer to pre-time-skip Bunny Drop in tone (and stayed there)) where I am. I imagined a story with the 3 dads happening to meet and getting along in their common situation, until...

*pets yotsuba gently* do NOT betray me...

I'm usually into age gap ships but Sesshomaru and Rin have always been a parent and child dynamic to me.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of it because it just skeeves me out in general, but I'm not gonna rain on anybody's parade. You do you, OP. Are you gonna watch the new adaptation?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really realize I gad been reading a book (fic -- fantasy) that contained grooming until re-reading it much later and IT PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH i couldn't finish the series.

That said, I LOVE Sesshomaru, LOVE him (yes, it's me, that anon). I just don't see their relationship that way. There's a lot of hero worship on her end, and I always felt like he's a father/protector. While I do feel he would be respectful (and unemotive), the only times I've really read fic with them and bought it was if he left her with The Gang(TM) to grow up amongst humans, and this one Sess/Kag fic where their relationship was never made explicitly clear, but he basically kept her as a princess and was devasted (wordlessly of course) when his palace was ransacked and destroyed and he couldn't save her.

I just feel like he wouldn't groom her, like...eh. I just can't see them like that. I always liked Rin with Kohaku or Shippo. If you got recs, I'm usually down.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean. He kind of did leave Rin to grow up with humans. Not that you have to ship it just because he did that, but it did happen.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-23 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Ahhh...okay. Yeah, I still don't ship it, but it I guess it would lend to the credibility/my own suspension of disbelief if they did end up together. I wouldn't be surprised if they did (seeing as how in the new series coming up his children are hald demon) bur I'm hoping she merely helped in opning up his heart and mind to finding the right human woman for him.

+1

I love this dynamic too. I especially love delving into if one or both of them have a moral quandary about it. The whole "we shouldn't do this...but we're doing it" in ships is something I really love. I don't necessarily like it when it's presented as totally normal and fine within the setting but if things turn out to have a happy ending for them even though that's #problematic I also like that too.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I find myself more repulsed by age gap ships (particularly older man/young girl) the older I get and realize how easily I could've been preyed on when I was younger. It still alarms me that I wasn't horrified by Rika/Terada in Cardcaptor Sakura when I read it as a kid.

I think there's a difference between fans making fanfic for an age gap ship that isn't canon (and therefore stays in a niche subgroup that doesn't influence much) and creators of a series making an age gap/groomy ship canon because the latter popularizes and normalizes it.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-23 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't grossed out by Rika/Terada either or by Ritsuka/Soubi from Loveless when I was younger. I recently rewatched Loveless and wondered what the hell was wrong with preteen me.

Fandom also has the advantage of a culture of tagging and warning for things that helps to contextualize the story and let the reader know the author is aware xyz is bad and that their writing isn't an endorsement and that the reader should think so too.

I love stories that explore really fucked up things but I do agree they should probably stay in the niche market as a wide audience just doesn't deal with such things very well at all.

That said I don't think Rin and Sesshomaru will be canon. It'll probably end up some random character we've never heard of did the dirty with him instead.

ra

I think at worst I didn't realize he waa her teacher, or if the thought crossed my mind it was like "what? no way. that's wierd. Can't be" but to be fair I watched the show, so the way they edited it must have been a source for my confuaion (just like Sailor Moon).

(Anonymous) 2020-05-23 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't like Rin and Sesshoumaru in particular because he comes across as a father figure to her and the age gap PLUS that just. Becomes ew.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-23 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it no matter what. I simply just cannot separate the grooming aspect of it no matter if it's fact or fiction. Like even if the adult has no intention of doing so, and is completely honest with trying to take care of the child there is still a level of manipulation and taking advantage of that I cannot get behind, there just is no way for the older character to genuinely want to protect and care for someone so young and then want to fuck them as soon as they pass puberty/legal age. It's basically a given that the kid will develop complicated feelings around their protector, especially in adolescence, and I just cant see it as anything but taking advantage when the adult encourages or supports those feelings for any sort of sexual gain. They could honestly believe that they're doing nothing wrong, or convince themselves those feelings are real, but there just isn't a way to go from swearing to look out for and protect a child/teen and then form or act on any kind of romantic impulse they develop as those intentions are in direct contrast to their pledge to protect. I just can't stand anything about it, at all.
I mean, people can ship what they want, but making this dynamic into a romantic/sexual one just skeeves me right the fuck out.
