Based on 8

What tropes/topics/genres do you avoid?

Re: Based on 8

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything with cancer.

Re: Based on 8

Love triangles. Most romantic comedies because they often involve an immature guy who has to learn how to grow up and be a responsible adult + get the woman of his dreams and I haaaaaaate that. I don't enjoy dystopian or post-apocalyptic fiction.

Re: Based on 8

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything remotely to do with sexual abuse.

Re: Based on 8

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sad endings. I either want happy endings or open-ended ones where the characters still have hope.

Re: Based on 8

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
In fanfic, pretty much everything that's sexually abusive, coercive, etc. Also main character death, permanent disfigurement/disability, cancer, most kidfic, and fics where my ship permanently splits up.

In original fiction...idk. I don't avoid much. I guess I avoid rape/ravishment fantasy stuff.

Untreated drug or alcohol dependency or mental illness. Especially if there are plot reasons for it being untreated. Being high doesn't help people solve crimes. Ughhhhh.

I'm fine with this trope unless it's combined with Pair The Spares And They All Had Kids. Then it becomes Squick with a capital 'S'. (See: Naruto)

Detective/artist/whatever with usually untreated mental health issues that supposedly make them better at their job. Just... no. Likewise, detectives with mental health issues + rage issues who behave very inappropriately at their job and yet somehow never get their asses fired.

Like this so badly! I hate it so much, especially the angry cop trope! It happens so often that the cop gets rewarded for being a crazed abusive murdering shit of a human being! It's my biggest pet peeve!

Bloody hell, all the times the high and mighty police officers on Law&Order:SVU got physical with suspects/threatened them with prison rape (unStabler was the worst offender but most of them did that one time or another) and never saw any consequences, especially when the suspects turned out to be innocent (not that it's okay to threaten/get physical with any suspect)... yikes.

Elaborate ruses to "get" the love interest. What's your endgame? If they go for the you, you have to either keep up that charade FOR EVER (that is, keep the new look, keep up with the hobby you took up, etc, and remember- they aren't doing it to get with YOU, they're doing it because they genuinely LOVE it) you drop it and HOPE that they can a) forgive the deception, b) love whatever real you there is under there, c) ever trust you again.

tbh I'd love this premise if the person going after their love interest was treated as the villain.

To me I guess it depends on how extreme the 'ruse' is? Like, if I started taking art classes or learning mechanics because someone I liked was interested in these things and I wanted to be able to have a connection/jumping off point, I don't see what's so bad about that?

And I can 100% say from experience that most people do NOT stick with a hobby/interest/style forever. It would be perfectly natural months or whatever down the line to lose interest in knitting, or kayaking, or having to maintain platinum blond hair.

Underage. Just not personally interested. Doesn't bother me that other people read, just not my thing. TBH I avoid media/fics involving kids and teens in general these days. Just not particularly interested.

Rape to love, dubcon that the author doesn't recognize as dubcon, that sort of thing.

OOC in general, but specifically woobification of villains and villanification of heroes. That said, a good author can redeem a villain or turn a hero evil, but they have to take the time to make it work. Most of the time, authors don't take the time and it ends up being OOC.

Anti-heroes are not my cup of tea most of the time, though there are exceptions. I'm more likely to make an exception for a female anti-hero.

Wealthy, white, playboy male characters aren't usually my cup of tea, though there are some that I like.

Clingy romantic interest.

Most of those are character tropes, but characters are what draw me to things or turn me off of things most of the time. Characters make or break a thing for me.

I avoid romances as a general rule. If the main plotline is a romance, I'm out. A romance as a subplot, okay. But I find romance on its own or as the main point boring.

Dark and gritty with all anti-heroes and villains and no straight-up heroes doing heroic things in spite of the dark setting. I don't mind dark as long as there is some hope and some good people doing the right thing even when the world they live in seems awful.

Fantasy where it is all macho, Conan-like men saving pretty princess women who can't do anything for themselves or think for themselves. Not my favorite fantasy idea.

Sex under false pretenses. Miscommunication.

I once read a fic where character A is in love with character B, they have sex, character B mocks character A and reveals it was all for funsies and games, character B doesn't really care about character A! Character B is lying about not having feelings for character A (they were doing it to drive them away ~for their own good~), but character A becomes suicidal and spends literal years agonizing about the incident, is clearly traumatized. Then, of course, character A ends up falling in love with character B again and the epilogue shows them HEA.
The story was well-written but my goodness, you wouldn't believe my rage.

So for my own sanity, I just avoid/stop reading and watching anything that even remotely resembles like it might be heading into those tropes.

Rape and non-con that's the driving force behind the story, any story (trash stuff comes to mind) where it's pretty much 99 percent of the content.

Extreme UST with practically no payoff.
Strict top/bottom dom-y/sub-y stuff.

Most dystopian stuff that focuses on hard-core homophobia and/or hard-core ethnic hate/oppression.

hurt/no comfort - I need the comfort to balance out the hurt in order to survive a sad fic.

I hate when someone who has a crush on another character or is in a relationship with them gets irrationally jealous when they perceive another person as a threat to their relationship. It's so overdone and anyone who reacts like this needs help and instead of highlighting how much they like the other person it just puts their connection into question. If you freak out that much over someone else merely existing in the vicinity of your love interest then you either 1. don't trust them at all or 2. know they're not actually all that into you and keenly aware once they find someone better or get bored of you they're off. Both are problems. And the writers just use it because they need some cheap drama. Jealousy plot lines in general I really hate. Related but I also HATE cheating plot lines for characters we're supposed to like and sympathize with.

When the main character is supposed to be the best or one of the best at x and then a throwaway character shows up that's able to challenge them or even beat them (at it). This annoys me because the writers set up the main character as having this unique trait and then throw away it being a unique skill/feature not because it's part of the overall story and that character's development to realize they're not that special after all but simply for a cheap shock value one off (this is especially annoying if said character is much younger than the main character). Either establish that The Thing is something lots of people are good at and something the main has to constantly be working at and improving or save the "a challenger has appeared!" moment for something important and with a character that's actually been set up as the main's rival.

I hate miscommunication as a plot device. Specially as a way to push the plot forward (or God forbid is the plot) instead of just a hiccup. It's overdone and exaggerated and depending on the characters' ages makes them seem very immature and socially inept.

I hate when a character is described as awkward, plain, average, etc. but everyone instantly loves them or thinks they're the most attractive person ever anyway. It's okay to have a very attractive main character y'all. Just write them as charming and good looking instead of giving them both the looks and personality of a wet dish rag and expecting us to believe anyone who matters in the story thinks they're just the hottest shit since sliced bread hit the scene.

I hate, hate, hate whenever characters do the "I hate them! They're so mean! The nerve but they're very good looking--NO I HATE THEM--but they have such dreamy [insert color here] eyes and [insert body type this character/author thinks is mouth watering] and...but no I can't think they're attractive we don't like each otherrrrrrr!" This shit is so annoying. It's not cute. Nobody talks like that. Either give a grudging "you don't deserve those good looks" sort of things or have the character neutrally acknowledge the other is attractive but that doesn't change their dislike of their personality or whatever.

in fic: underage, rape/non-con, character death, unhappy endings, hurt without comfort, cheating/infidelity, suicide/mental health issues depending on how it's handled, most threesomes as i'm not much of an ot3'er.

in original media: anything with teen suicide, suicide in general sometimes depending on how it's handled, overt violence/sexual violence towards women, rape depending on how it's handled, bury your gays, overt levels of racism/general xenophobic attitudes/behavior.

there is some stuff i'm flexible on in those lists, like if a writer does a good job of handling one of my 'no's' then i can enjoy it, but for the most part i er of the side of caution and keep away unless i'm told it's a good variation of one of those tropes/topics.

Pair the spares. I ran into in a webtoon and nevwr realized how much it annoyed me (it usually doesn't, but when it's used to placate a failed love triangle, it just irritates me).

amnesia, romantic!soulmates, tanakaki (sp?), baby fic, body swap, dark fic.
The other tropes, I might give it a go.

Anything that involves animals being hurt, mistreated, or abused.
Pet Death.
Major Character Death, in a hurt/no comfort situation, and depending on the character.
Any kind of suicide, heavily suicidal ideology, and cutting.

Ugh, and so much more...
