Man, I wish I'd seen a recommendation like yours instead of the "the novel is better because it's actually canon" side of things. Sigh.

Oh wow, I am so sorry. I can't imagine honestly saying that because the novel translation is a trainwreck in terms of writing, IMO. Even from a m/m loving point of view, it's still... not good. I guess if people really, really want to see their ship together in text and don't care if the writing is just cringetastically terrible and LWJ turns into this gruff dominant dude who wants to bang 24/7 and WW turns into a whimpering uke, then... yeah, fine, the novel is "better".

I prefer the adaptation. It's romantic even if it's not explicit and spelled out for the audience and it stays in character. I'm free to imagine their romance with an in-character ending that doesn't read like it was written by a 14 year old slash fan.

AYRT Yeah I love the adaptation. I gave the novel my best shot because I wanted more information, but I'm good just....ignoring it otherwise. I've only ever recced the drama.

Except for the smut and the very short confession, the novel IS better in terms of plot and major plot twist reveals though. The translation isn't perfect but I think judging the book by the badly written smutty extras that you can easily skip and one cringey scene towards the end is pretty unfair. I thought a lot of the writing and interaction in the drama was cringey and badly written as hell as well so I don't know why this is such a problem for people in the novel but not in the drama.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I liked getting the expanded background details in the novel, but I did not enjoy the bouncing back and forth between timelines, I thought the Yi City arc went on too long and I felt much more invested in the main characters after watching the drama. It wasn't just the extras.

I don't think the writing in the drama was perfect, but it helped that was it condensed down a little and that they left out some of the worst parts, i.e. all the dialogue and interaction between WW and LWJ as they're getting together. It has its flaws and its moments where I wish they could've stuck closer to the book. But in general, I prefer the drama.

The drama was over 70% past plot which knocked the general balance off course.
I do agree the the Yi City arc as too long, but it was too long in the drama as well compared to everything else. I think that arc is too long in every adaption.

nayrt But the past plot gave context and helped build up their relationship in the present, didn't it?

I do think the past plot is very important, yes. But the way the drama did it, it was more like the past being the only thing that mattered and the development of their relationship in the present was more of an afterthought. I do think both versions have their own issues but imo, what I liked about the novel - the kinda detective plot in the present- got the short end of the stick in the drama while some past events where needlessly stretched.

In general, I do believe that someone who already watched the drama wouldn't need to read the novel but having read the novel first, some of the things the censorship adds and takes away just don't sit well with me.
