I'm into pretty boys too. But I usually pick ones that are actually pretty and relatively feminine in appearance in canon (femboy rights!). I don't really like changing any character's appearance at all unless it's for AU purposes (like giving them fangs for a vampire AU).

Honestly my favorite type of M/M ship is two pretty boys together where one isn't the top or the bottom but they both switch.

But yeah part of the reason why I dislike changing a characters appearance or anything from canon is that you get attached to the idea of them you made up and disappointed whenever you engage with the source material or run into other fancontent that depicts them as they are in canon. I think a of of wank surrounding headcanons and such ends up being because of this.

I feel like in western live action (which is my niche) there just aren't many pretty boys. I mean, there are men who are masculine in a slightly pretty way. But not very many who are just out and out pretty.

Especially since the trend right now seems to be muscles and gymsporation, so even guys who start off slim and pretty often bulk up once they start to get successful (and often the muscle gain shows in their face as well.)

Yep, that sums it up. I definitely try to keep myself in check, though. Like, I headcanon what I want, but I really try not to confuse my headcanon with canon.

I'm never sure how to feel about this, because it often feels like the fanon version of the character is just so much more cookie-cutter. I think it takes a lot of skill to write this way while still respecting the distinctive features of the original character

OP - That's fair, IMO. I mean, this is my secret and I still feel like fandom takes it too far for my liking a lot of the time. Especially when the changes heavily affect the way the character behaves, too. That gets squicky fast, for me.

For better or for worse, there aren’t a lot of real-life people who actually look like anime bishonen. (Of course, there aren’t a lot of people who look like ‘80s Arnold Schwarzenegger, either. Lots of iconic fictional types have only a few real-life representatives.)

I've seen some that would fit the bill but they're usually celebrities who go through a lot of trouble to maintain looking that way. But it's not impossible it's basically just a dude who is a bit or a lot androgynous and considered attractive because of it.

I think it is more prevalent in East Asian countries. Because it's a cultural beauty thing, so there are more successful celebrities with that look, while in the U.S. we go for a different look. Just compare prominent Asian American actors with big actors in Japan and Korea.

OP - My real-life, Caucasian go-to for this look is Troye Sivan. I am constantly headcanoning characters as looking more like Troy Sivan than they actually do. 😂
venusundae: kanaya is embarrassed or annoyed or maybe even both (086 (you can't say no to it))

i feel you. i constantly vacillate between "this person is gay bc [arbitrary trait]" and "oh no that's wrong of me to think" and "but i'm allowed bc i'm gay and also mostly kidding" and also "no, bad, stop justifying it" lmao

I just ship characters with whoever I want without thinking about if they have a set sexuality. If I want to ship two characters together and they're the same sex then well they're both attracted to the same sex now. And I never really explain if I think they're gay or bi. For me it's just entirely dependent on what I what to ship and what story I want to tell ATM. They could be gay in one story, bisexual in another I write, or straight.

A lot of characters I end up multishipping though so I guess most of them I see as bisexual overall.

Oh, I get this, OP. And I always feel really awful when I think like that too because it's so wrong. I read Supernatural fic before I started watching the show and, when I did watch the show, I was like, "That's Dean?!" because every fic I read described him as a typically waifish bishie. Dean's pretty, but he's definitely not built like a waif.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
OP - Hahaha! Oh man, yeah, writers be taking liberties if they're describing Dean like a pretty, effeminate boy.

I actually DO think Jensen Ackles had a very pretty kind of masculinity when he was younger. But he was still very masculine looking, even in his late teens.

Who's the character, OP? I want to access if he's twinkish enough

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
OP - I'm kinding outing my identity a little, but sure, why not.

I've had this happen to me with other characters, but at the moment the character it's happening with is MCU Peter Parker.

I don't feel like he was ever really "twinkish" per se, but he was kind of close in the early days. But he's pretty much completely left that behind at this point. Which is doubly complicated by the fact that I only ship legally-of-age Peter, so basically, he grew out of the borderline-twinkish looks I headcanon him having, as he was growing into the age where I actually ship him.
