I really want to kindly tell you to fuck off.

Now, I normally don't get this enraged over f!s.

But really. Way to stereotype an entire fandom.

I like the motherfucking HISTORY. It's really interesting to think of countries as PEOPLE and to see how they INTERACT.

And yeah, there's gonna be slash, as there is in just about EVERY. OTHER. FANDOM.

And have you ever thought that maybe it's popular because it is ENTERTAINING and FUN, not just because it "has a lot of bishounen"? For me, it's just a lulzy perk.

...And by the way, laughing at WWII? There've been plenty of far more tasteless, politically incorrect jokes made about it - this isn't one of them. In fact, if you've actually read it, it sort of glosses over the parts that would be seen as more controversial. I don't read it and go "oh lol those nazis, how cute, you persecute and murder those so-called 'lesser human beings'".

Just...stfu. I'm sick of people generalizing this fandom so much. At least learn what the fuck you're talking about.

MOTHERFUCKING WORD.

God, people need to get the damn stick out of their asses. Hetalia isn't about "LOL HOLOCAUST", it's just a ridiculous little comic about anthropomorphized countries. There are a million more offensive things out there to get offended about.

Re: 139

[identity profile] cookie-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.

Honestly, I think anyone who honestly believes that's what Hetalia is about has obviously never read it.

Re: 139

[identity profile] lapoix.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly feel like people are just looking for an excuse to get offended over something.

Re: 139

[identity profile] dragoon1940.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Japan should not be laughing about WWII, considering they haven't even tried to atone for their part in it or even acknowledge the fact that they did something wrong.

Re: 139

[identity profile] cookie-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I had thought that they disbanded their military forces, making it into "defense" or something...I'm fuzzy on the details. But as far as I know, they did acknowledge that they were in the wrong.

Aside from all that - this isn't a political thing. It's...just for fun. I honestly don't think that everything has to be taken so seriously.

As a country, maybe yes. WWII is no laughing matter as a whole, considering the loss of human life and associated atrocities.

But what I'm hearing here is that because the comic artist is Japanese, he has no right to make a WWII-related comic? Because obviously his viewpoint is invalid just because of where he was born? Classy!

Hetalia = hetare (useless) and Italia (Italy) - in other words, the comic is about how useless Italy was to the Axis Powers as a military force in WWII. Not about Japan being a perfect angel.

Re: 139

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
You keep replying with this, and you fail just as much every time.

So just going to remind you, again, that Japan is not a single entity with one hivemind, and Japan as a country or a government =/= one single Japanese person. Do you know if the creator of Hetalia feels bad about what happened and knows it was wrong? No? Then kindly stop trying to say that because his home country has not been mature in its handling of the monstrosities of that war, he has no right to be anything but shamed and apologetic and meek about that part of history.

Re: 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. If a country hasn't acknowledged the slaughter, rape and forced relocation of a people, and actively tries to rewrite the history of these people and places at any opportunity, then one citizen shouldn't be allowed to make an irreverent webcomic about a vaguely related event.

By the way, how was your fucking Thanksgiving this year?

Re: 139

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hetalia should be already in the TV Tropes page about Complaining About Shows You Don't Watch.

And yeah, I'm a major History nut and like Hetalia for *gasp!* more than the cute guys. So are lots of other fans. =P

This is the problem. So many people aren't aware of the horrors of war and I'm not just talking about WWII. Rape of Nanking, US soldiers raping in Okinawa, I really don't need to go on.

You think that moefying countries that had official policies of rape and slaughter against eachother in wartime is cute and interesting? Cut me a break.

Re: 139

[identity profile] cookie-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I know about all the bad things that happens during war. I realize that basically all countries, civilizations, wars have horrible things attached to them.

Part of the thing that I like about Hetalia is that it makes you do research on your own - I've learned a lot more history because of the things it has made me research.

I just...I don't think that it always has to be serious. I mean, yes, I think people should know the bad things about war, but I also think that they can be allowed to see a lighter side of it. Drowning yourself in the woe of the world is only going to make you depressed.

And really - anyone who takes Hetalia as full, honest-to-God truth is really just...naive. Obviously things aren't as cute as they might make it seem, you know?

Ugh, this is tl;dr, and I don't feel like I'm communicating my point properly. Maybe I'll try again later.

I was under the impression there was more to history than soldiers raping people.

Why don't we focus on Turkey and how horrible the Turks were to neighboring countries?

Hell, let's nitpick every single historical massacre there has ever been and feel offended about it. Really, I'm game. Oh, and while we're at it, we can look at oppression and racism.

Seriously, get over it.

Re: 139

[identity profile] rainy-takako.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
So many people aren't aware? Cut me a break. Anyone who's taken a decent history class, or even has a bit of common sense knows that there are always atrocities associated with war. Sorry to say but there are lots of historical parodies, but seeing as Hetalia is the first one with a fandom on ~the internets~ I don't think that justifies calling out the entire fandom as mindless idiots who think that war is fun and games just because the comic itself doesn't go into Nazism or rape. Why don't you go write an angry rant about people who like that song in The Producers before you jab at Hetalia fandom? You honestly think that all the people who read Hetalia look at it and go "Oh my, SHINY BISHONEN! Clearly this comic has brainwashed me into thinking that war is happy and fun!!"? Please.

Hetalia is a parody of history, all history, and if that doesn't float your boat then that's fine, you don't have to read it, but don't go around generalizing about the fan base as shallow twats who don't know the first thing about history or are meaning to disrespect it by finding Hetalia entertaining. I love history and that's why I love Hetalia, because I personally don't think learning about what's happened in the world always has to be strictly serious business. You're kind of missing the point if you don't understand that Hetalia is not meant to be "history of the world according to the author."

Re: 139

[identity profile] nittle-grasper.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's glossed over. But really, Hetalia doesn't claim to give you the full picture. When people make generalized jokes about France losing wars and Russia being crazy, people know not to get offended because it's meant to be humorous. I could say that all jokes about France losing everything are off-color because, hey, people died in those wars. But seriously, news is serious enough, we don't need to be politically correct all the time. Shows like Daily Show/Colbert do it all the time, and people laugh it off because it's not MEANT to be a textbook on the cruelties of nationalism and politics.

I think you are overestimating what Hetalia actually is. It's there to be entertaining and generalized and funny. And admittedly, some people do read Hetalia with little knowledge of history and might not take it with a grain of salt like they should, but that's not Hetalia's fault nor is it the whole fandom.

And how does one cut a break, exactly?

[identity profile] kasugai-gummie.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Suggestion: Create your own series where anthropomorphic countries are beating each other within an inch of their existence and raping anything they deem rape-able. Be sure to slap an R-18 on it before releasing though.

Newsflash: History isn't comprised of mainly war. Nations don't coexist simply by rape/pillage/razing. It's a lot more complex than that. I'm personally a military history geek and yet I enjoy Hetalia because it's a clever parody of the world and the stereotypes that perpetuate in it. If you're too sensitive to appreciate that sort of humor then that's just too bad.

Re: Official Policies of rape and slaughter
Most countries have had histories of rape/slaughter/etc etc. It's fucking war. If they didn't go out and about annexing then they'd be the ones conspicuously missing from our 21st century maps. In short: It happens. (http://www.livius.org/a/turkey/eurymedon/eurymedon.html)

Re: 139

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
... How is that the problem again? Does every series about war and history have to be totally serious business now, because anything else is absolutely horrendous and shouldn't be allowed because it's not OMG EDUCATING PEOPLE?

It's a lighthearted, cracky humor series. Duh it's going to gloss over the more unpleasant parts of pretty much everything. If you want a serious story about the horrors of war and how certain countries committed monstrous acts, how about you don't try to find it in a cutesy crack series, and don't try to tell people that it's horrible that a story like that exists because it's not DARK enough.

Re: 139

[identity profile] evil-laugher.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much why I can't enjoy it. It's impossible for me to take the genocide and the rape out of the picture. There is no way to cutesify gloss over it.

It's really interesting to think of countries as PEOPLE and to see how they INTERACT.

Right, because this series it totally an accurate portrayal of that. There's no stereotypes present at all.

Re: 139

[identity profile] cookie-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Did I say there were no stereotypes? Of course there are stereotypes. The entirety of the characters' personalities are stereotypes.

That right there should be tip-off that it's not meant to be taken TOTALLY SERIOUSLY. It's just for fun, as most pieces of fiction are.

So please, anon, lighten up. If you want some srs bzns history, read a textbook.

Re: 139

[identity profile] callicot.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
This.

The best part is that people seem to forget that while WWII is the main focus, there is a TON of other comics about various wars and events. But apparently because it doesn't involve their country, or didn't have as much bloodshed, it's okay to make fun of? I don't get these people.
