I actually don't think songfic is that bad. Maybe other writers look back on writing them and cringe, but I actually think they were some of my best works.

It really depends on how they were written. Most of the ones I came across were really the song's entire lyrics with maybe 1K of the story text written around it, so I didn't care much for them. Songfics work better if the lyrics are an accent and not the bulk, or the thing driving the story.

Kinda agree. Those that have one line of lyrics alternating with one line of actual fic are just annoying.

I once found a fic that was basically "Scully was driving one day and a song came on the radio that reminder her of Mulder. [lyrics] The End."

That's not fanfic so much as an idea for a fan vid. (I don't blame the author for not just making a fanvid since that was harder to do back then.)

But the real question is: Was is a Sarah McLachlan song?

Sooo many Sarah McLachlan song fics around that time.

I want to write some fic that's basically songfic, but I'm too self-conscious :c

I definitely look back on mine and cringe. I still like to read songfics as long as the lyrics don't take up tons of space, but I don't write them anymore,

A fic that is inspired by a song is one thing.

But true songfic, where parts of the song (or sometimes the whole song) are interspersed throughout the text of the fic, will always be cringey to me. I wrote a couple, as a teen, and they're cringey as fuck. But IMO even really good writers (not me) generally can't make songfic good.

This, pretty much. If one must include lyrics in a fic, just a couple lines or a verse at the beginning or the end of the fic that best fits the story will do.

Course, then again, I do know fics including lyrics aren't even allowed on FF.net, because of potential litigation issues, so it's kind of a moot issue anyway. I don't know what AO3's stance on that issue is, though.

AYRT - Agreed. I know that kind of thing has gone a little bit out of fashion, but I have no problem with it. Especially a few lines of a poem or a more obscure literary quote or something, at the beginning or the end. Sometimes it can be really resonant and lovely. That kind of thing never bothers me. Even when the thing that's quoted does nothing for me, I find it almost never detracts from the work, and is usually easy to ignore if I feel like ignoring it.

I wish there was a website where you could post a picture of yourself and commenters would help you by telling you your perfect cosplay character fit. It's hard to be objective enough to know what character you actually look like to do a decent cosplay.
