I hate Reylo so I just don’t follow any hardcore Reylo shippers who post about it a lot. Problem solved. I will say I hate Kylo Ren here on FS when the topic comes up, but that’s as far as I go. I find the “omg Ben Swolo did nothing wrong so hot adorable space Mr. Darcy” crowd annoying as fuck when I’m reminded they exist, so I try to pretend they don’t.

I still haven't watched the third film but I used to kind of like Reylo. But I don't understand how people can say he did nothing wrong. I think they want their favorite ship to be "unproblematic" but the guy's a Star Wars villain.

The antis got ridiculously nasty over it but I didn't really have to deal much with antis. (I knew people who didn't like it, sure, but not people who made a moral crusade out of it.)

But Reylo fans have made me some pretty awesome art imo.

AYRT—a lot of the fans excusing him really seemed to identify with the whole “let the past die, kill it, if you have to” thing, and assumed that Han’s leaving and Leia’s focus on statecraft were abusive somehow. His killing his “abusive” dad was cathartic for them because cutting ties with abusive family irl is demonized because “they’re family, you have to forgive them!” Or something. I had fandoms in common with a lot of Reylo fans whose blogs I eventually stopped following, but before that I tried to read some of the non-thirst reasons they rooted for him.

I didn’t even like Han that much but I felt like a lot of Kylo fans were seeing him as a proxy for their actual abusive parents who offered to welcome them back into their families if they gave up their justified anger at years of abuse. Idk. I get that allowing yourself to be angry at and not forgive abusive family can be freeing for a lot of people, but my family contained an actual incestuous pedophile rapist so people projecting that kind of anger on Han Solo for maybe being a deadbeat dad seemed like literal overkill.

Destructive anger and the freedom to lash out and be selfish aren’t fantasies or aspirations of mine, I guess? Being passionate about stuff is cool but I look at someone like Kylo Ren and see the fictional counterpart of a school shooter angry that his home life sucks and mad that he’s expected to control his anger. Nothing about that is sexy.

I am flailing at how much I agree with all of this.

I love this comment so much, it's so well articulated and, imo, accurate.

DA

But I don't understand how people can say he did nothing wrong.

It's a meme. We don't actually think he's completely blameless, but we're tired of justifying our interest in his character.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-31 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No, there are definitely plenty of people coming up with excuses for his actions, as there are with most white male villains.

I mean, canon is making it easy to say that now, so I can understand if people are using it unironically.

I don't get the "he did nothing wrong" camp either. I also didn't get the "he's the worst villain ever, he's worse than Vader and irredeemable for killing Han no matter who else killed more people how dare you suggest he could possibly be redeemed" camp either back pre-TROS given how common redemption stories are in Star Wars. I didn't love how his redemption was done, but I do like redemption stories and was game for him being redeemed if done right.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-31 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with Kyle's redemption wasn't that he was more evil than Vader and thus could never be redeemed. The problem was that Kyle's backstory boiled down to "Mommy and Daddy don't pay enough attention to me so I'ma be a Nazi," so most people were more interested in seeing him take a fist to his whiny bitch face than seeing him redeemed.

NA: That, and he spent two movies responding to almost every attempt at reconciliation with extreme violence. Then, mid-movie we get a Force Heal, a heart-to-heart with ghost dad, and a sudden 180.

And that's totally cool. I just had issues with the "he's worse than Vader because he killed Han" camp.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-31 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know that either is worse than the other. Both fully embrace the Tarkin doctrine, and Kylo gives a monologue advocating for it. Killing Han is just a dingleberry on a shit sundae.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-31 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say that I've ever seen anyone say the only reason Kylo Ren is worse than any other villain is that he killed Han Solo. Sorry you've run into that.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-31 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's like so much stuff out there. Why waste time hating on something that doesn't work for you?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-31 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT—I won’t lie, I tried to understand the appeal, since I shared fandoms in common with a lot of Reylo fans, but the more they explained, the less I agreed with them and the more annoyed I got. I don’t even like Darcy, but he’s no Mr. Darcy.
