I don’t think “casual” is the term for all the mutilation in BNHA.

OP; spoilers

I mean casual in terms of the author's treatment of them. Someone losing their powers and lifelong dream should be traumatic at least in SOME form, but nope, dude's perfectly cheerful and laughing with everyone else. Someone loses an arm when their ability uses their hands, it's fine he still has his other hand and a new prosthesis, his missing hand isn't even really mentioned again.

Someone loses both their legs, here's this random sequence of him falling off his wheelchair/prosthetic (forgot which) played for laughs! And okay, he's a villain that's probably killed some people, but it just bothers me that the author keeps writing in serious consequences and then treats it lightly like it doesn't matter. It's like body parts don't matter to the writer when losing any parts of my body has always been my lifelong biggest fear.

... that actually sounds really refreshing to me? There's nothing I hate more than when stuff like that is turned into a vehicle for nonstop angst. Yeah, for some people it is a hugely traumatic, life-altering thing, but there are also a heck of a lot of people who adapt and move on with their life and don't let it keep them down.

I know someone who lost a leg and while it absolutely altered the trajectory of his life, he's an otherwise happy and well-adjusted person who leads a pretty normal life. I'm glad to hear there are some series that don't treat that sort of thing as being the end of the world because that's exactly what people like him need to be able to see.

No one said it has to be nonstop angst. There are seinin/adult series that deal with losing body parts maturely. Learning to adapt, adjustment periods, acceptance is all part of it.

...None of which is present. It's all hand-waved away for the next action scene, or for the main characters to upgrade/get some new powers.

Seems like something like FMA would be a better fit for what you're looking for than what AYRT is describing. Traumatic losses in that series are treated seriously but aren't angst machines.

OP here, I agree with this! FMA doesn't exactly focus on the loss of body parts either, but everything still feel like it mattered, every loss is felt and counted. If we're talking about how I think bodily mutulation (and really plot handling in general) should be dealt with in shounen, I think FMA is a good example of balance.

I stopped reading BNHA a while ago, but I got the impression there was a public/private face thing going on. Like when Ragdoll lost her powers, we got a panel of her crying together with her friends, then we got her in public acting cheerful and accepting about it.

Ragdoll is maybe one of the better-treated ones. It still bothered me, but at least it's not played for laughs and she's far enough in the background that her scenes are pretty balanced.

Since you haven't following, I think you're just going to have to trust me that it gets much, much worse in other cases.

...that's almost more limb loss than One Piece and that's saying a lot.

Then again, the mangaka started drawing by submitting One Piece fanart to Oda so maybe they're subconsciously picking up on that facet of their favorite manga?
