Where did all that hyper-masculinity stuff even come from? Was it some kind of pushback against yaoi?

There's this subset (or at least there was)of female slash writers who worship the idea of writing men "correctly". Yeah, I think it's a pushback against certain complaints people have about slash, but it tends to go wildly in the opposite direction, until it's just as inaccurate.

I have never even heard of this stuff until now.

I feel like it came from the really old school fandom stuff, which was heavy on "gay for you" tropes for a while. Also probably homophobia, tbh.

I remember the "I'm not gay I'm just gay for you" thing as being a way to make a ship work when a character was always shown as attracted to the opposite sex. I guess we didn't know about bisexuality in 2001. But anyway, I remember a ton of "gay for you" stories but I don't remember much hyper masculine characterization. If anything I think we stanned the men with Feelings (tm).

It was a different time. People were railing about even the suggestion that HP characters might be gay because 'think of the kids!' And I remember as a teenage slasher feeling genuinely conflicted - like maybe even considering reading slash was wrong even though I knew myself I was bi.

There was a lot more guilt, secrecy, internalised homophobia, and repression back then because homophobia was considered more normal still. Writing RPF, the 'only gay for you' was a way of not making people actually gay. Because that made them weak. IT was immensely fucked up and a very toxic way of thinking. It took me a while to unlearn it from LOTRPS but also SG1 fandom.

Society has come a long way since then or at least I hope so.

Damn, I'm sorry you had to deal with that and in your first fandom too. That really stinks. If you're still writing, I hope you're able to write what you love and not give a shit about other people's ideas for how to write these characters. Also, I gotta say I've never been in a fandom where the guys were written as hyper-masculine. It's usually the opposite in my experience.

Wow, I'm sorry that happened to you. That was entirely not my experience with LOTRiPS. My ship was "puppies and rainbows" for the most part.

Man, I dunno what LOTRps you were reading but....wow.

I was reading all sorts of fun, emotional, sexy stuff.

Which is a bizzaro shame, since JRRT has his problems, but he does write men who are allowed to grieve, cry, and talk about their undying platonic love for each other. Not to mention that the entire POINT is that Sauron is destroyed not by warfare but by underestimated, peace-loving people. I still remember the first time I read Gimli finding out that his people in Moria had been massacred and tearing up at 2 in the morning.
