I hope 16 is the age of consent in that state.

I also can't believe she's still writing this series.

I believe that was part of her argument that it wasn't creepy and wrong, that technically in the state where the story takes place, 16 is old enough to consent. It still feels pretty goddamn creepy and wrong, though.

Legal doesn't always mean moral or non-icky

"Legal doesn't always mean moral or non-icky"

I needed to say it again for the cheap seats in the back. I hate when men, and lets be honest it's almost always men, say "as long as she is legal it doesn't matter if she is 17 and I am 34". 🤢🤢🤢

Lol no. Women mostly have no issues lusting after underage boys and rarely see consequences if they "seduce"(ew) them irl. (See: all those Twilight moms and all those female teachers committing statutory rape and getting a slap on the wrist at worst.)

Predatory teachers I get, absolutely, but where do "Twilight moms" come into this?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-06 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
They were salivating after a much, much younger Robert Pattinson in a way that would have been seen as majorly creepy if men had done it to a female actress (which they absolutely do). Same with older female fans of bands with young guys (kpop comes to mind). I'm not begrudging anyone their fun but if it's creep behaviour when men do it, it should be seen as creep behaviour when women do it, too.

I think the thing that most people don't get about the "Twilight mom" type is that they're living their own teenage fantasy. You think they're fantasising about Edward falling in love with a 40 year old mom? In their fantasies they're BELLA. Who is 17. I don't see why this isn't obvious to everyone.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-06 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why either. It's bleeding obvious.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-06 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I was never really into Twilight but for every older woman I know who was, it was about nostalgia for teenage romance.

Every older person has memories of being a teenager, after all. I think a lot of really young people either forget that or don't really understand it.

da
Their fixation on Robert Pattinson was still creepy though! It's one thing to be way into Twilight and imagining yourself in Bella's place -- it's something else to take that into real life and project it onto the actor.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-06 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what are you saying here? That it's creepy to have a crush on a celebrity much younger than you? DO I HAVE TO GIVE UP HIDDLES?!

(Anonymous) 2020-06-06 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Pattinson was 22 when the first movie came out. That's a grown-ass adult. It's not at all like cyberstalking a teenager.

Can't believe you guys brought this up and didn't mention any of the shit the guy who played Jacob had to go through he was, what, FIFTEEN during all this and grown ass women lusted after him and he was forced to work out and go on a diet to have abs for the shirtless scenes FFS.
