I hope 16 is the age of consent in that state.

I also can't believe she's still writing this series.

I believe that was part of her argument that it wasn't creepy and wrong, that technically in the state where the story takes place, 16 is old enough to consent. It still feels pretty goddamn creepy and wrong, though.

Legal doesn't always mean moral or non-icky

What I hate is that I really liked that series in the beginning, and then it just turned into this weird ass orgy thing and I was like, "... what? Why?"

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I agree with this. I was so down for supernatural crime solving! I loved it. Then the crimes got shoved to the wayside for sex and endless, endless, ENDLESS relationship conversations and bleh. Obsidian Butterfly was the last one I really enjoyed. I still reread that one and the ones leading up to it, but the ones after?

Now, Merry Gentry, on the other hand, I read because it was up front about the garbage of the plot from the beginning and I enjoy the sheer madness of how many baby daddies she's got. lol.

Yesssss, I read some of the first ones, liked them. Years later I saw one of her new books and grabbed it on a whim. I couldn't believe it was the same series. I finished the book and realized that the whole book took place over about two days and all that happened was fantasy orgies and angst about said orgies.

She got past the all-orgies, all-the-time phase with the books, but I still stopped reading them a while later. I felt like it would be easier to follow along using a spreadsheet that listed which powers Anita gained in each book, which new were-types she brought into her family, and how many times "things tightened low in her body".

Same.

I picked up a trilogy-type set (I think it was 8 books into 3? Or something) and really enjoyed it! I was a young adult and while it made me blush b/c I was the type that hadn't read published smut before, otherwise/and I was REALLY into the rest of the stories. Plus: Vampires!

I'm sure some felt it as a self-inserty type thing, too, iirc.

And then I don't recall if I picked up the next in line, or just the first one I could get my hands on, but I noticed it became more and more about Magic Sex And Bonds with the lovely touch of jealous "boyfriends" (?) and less about the mystery and detective work. And as each one (again, I don't recall which ones) went on, it got WORSE in that direction.

I gave up eventually.

I did hear a few years back (?) that it had calmed down on that, but now seeing this? I guess "calmed down" was just minor in comparison and decided to add in this, too. Does she even DO detective work anymore? Help the living find peace with the deceased? Anything like that?

she co-wrote the first few books with her husband who she modeled the Richard character after. Then she and her husband divorced and she turned Richard into a piece of shit asshole as revenge. What you see now is her terrible id without a restraining influence.

Every time I think I've heard every crazy thing there is to know about LKH's writing, I get whacked in the face with new information. 😅

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I know. That's why when someone said that nobody will ever beat Anne Rice in the Crazy Author Olympics I thought... hmmm. Just wait.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there some ~historical compilation of this drama? Haha

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love me some batshit writer drama. I'm gonna go see if I can find the Reddit post.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone reported that to Amazon? Even for a big-name author, an adult having sex with someone under 18 might be enough to get it pulled. That's certainly enough to get an erotica author banned, regardless of the age of consent where it's taking place. I realize LKH in particular gets away with a lot of shit other authors would get banned for, but an actual adult having sex with a damn underage teenager isn't okay.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is really optimistic of you to believe. It's one thing to yank self-published authors who don't have huge fan followings and bestselling books and a traditional publisher with lawyers to back them up. I don't think LKH is shaking in her goth boots.

Wait, she made real people have sex? I thought this was fiction! Damn, does she murder real people too? Has she been documenting her own magical crimes this whole time?!?

Are... are you serious. Do you know what's in books? Do you know how many books Amazon would have to pull if underage sex was a valid reason to pull a book? Do you think they'd ever in a million years pull Game of Thrones?

Honeylamb, just because you can harass some kid on Tumblr into deleting their work and swearing they'll never do it again please stop telling me to kill myself... doesn't mean you can pull the same thing on Amazon.
It's fucking Amazon. They don't give a fuck.

*shrugs*

If it's legal and it's not written as abusive (or is abusive but is acknowledged to be abusive), then meh, whatever. I mean, yeah, it does make me wonder why the author has chosen to make the LI that young. Like, why not eighteen? Why not nineteen?

But still, bottom line: meh, whatever.

Basically all of the relationship between Anita and her harem are fucked up and loaded with dubious consent, and afaik it's basically only ever mentioned as being fucked up that poor Anita has to have so many steamy orgies with hot were-whatevers and vampires, it really cuts into her sneering and posturing time dontchaknow.

I really liked her first few books. I was totally into Anita. She was a badass right until she started fucking Jean-Claude then it all went to shit. I quit the series right after that and haven't looked back. I do know if Anita had kept being so awesome instead of a fang-hag I would have read the rest of the books.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-06 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever tried the Hollows Series by Kim Harrison? It's been a while since I read it last but it's got a similar "badass supernatural detective chick" concept without...all that mess.

I've never actually read her books, but I remember stumbling upon a LiveJournal community dedicated to Anita Blake snark way back in the day. It's probably not fair to her or her work that's all my impression is based on, but the comm was some fascinating reading.
