DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
We love you. But please only make secrets in threads you start. So that we don't get doubles as indicated in the first secret today.

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I have made some from other threads and other anons have made some from my threads. Was this actually a rule?

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Not a rule, but we're suggesting it should be to keep from having two people making secrets from the same comment. If you just make secrets from your own thread, then there won't be any repeats.

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Okay but then people like me who only make a couple a week won't anymore because we won't start threads since most of those secrets won't be made.

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Someone below said they make threads without making the secrets. So if they make the thread and specify in it that they won't be making the secrets, you could go in that thread and claim comments. But if a thread doesn't say that the person won't be making the secrets, assume that the person will be making them.

We just need a system of some kind so we don't have people doubling up.

I love the idea of people making their own claim work. Claim potato!

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I start a lot of those threads but I don't make the secrets.

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you can start a thread but specifically specify that you won't be making the secrets, and then someone else can claim the comments?

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? I've been starting those threads for months now and people keep making secrets from them. Why make it more complicated than it has to be?

I THINK WE SHOULD LET CASE MAKE THE CALL

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
As the titles says. Case has been modding all this time. I think we should let Case think on it and decide if he (case is a he, right? I forget these things) wants to request we try a new system to keep things sorted out.

Just my vote.

This is the first time that I've seen this happen. Has it been happening a lot that things might need to be changed because of it?

Re: I THINK WE SHOULD LET CASE MAKE THE CALL

I think many of us have gotten the impression that Case is getting a LOT of double-ups from secret-makers, ever since the comm has shifted to having most of its secrets submitted anonymously in the GC.

It certainly makes logical sense that he'd be getting a lot of double-ups, since right now none of the secret makers have any way of knowing whether someone else is also making the same secret.

It's not that I mind the repeats, personally. They're easy to ignore (or hey, maybe I think of something new to say the second time around!). But for the functional health of F!S I can see why minimizing repeats is important, since they basically function like dead wood, and if Case just let them all come through, the comm would probably start to feel cluttered with repeat content.

Re: I THINK WE SHOULD LET CASE MAKE THE CALL

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it hasn't. That's why I suggest that perhaps it's not that serious and unless case feels it creates too much extra work for him, we could just... let it go? There doesn't seem to be any harm done and most people seem to enjoy seeing different versions of the same secret, purely for the entertainment value.

Re: I THINK WE SHOULD LET CASE MAKE THE CALL

Thanks, case! When I start a thread, I usually state upfront that I'm a secret maker and that's what the thread is for, so I guess that's a "claim". But in many instances, the threads are started by someone else who doesn't specify whether or not they're a secret maker. Usually, they're not, and I haven't run into many issues just making those secrets without commenting to "claim" them. I can start doing this but it will slow down the process somewhat, so I hope nobody minds.

Thanks for running this community after all this time, case!

Dear Secret Makers:

Keep doing whatever you want. You're the reason this comm exists. You each have your own creative approach to presenting secrets, and it's interesting to see, even if the wording/sentiment is the same. Thank you!

This right here—someone who wouldn’t even know where to begin making their own secrets and is really happy you guys stepped up to help. Thank you! (And Case!)

Like really.

Re: DEAR SECRET MAKERS

Yeah.

I imagine it will be a problem at times, but when these threads are created, sometimes the comm will make 50-60 replies, so there's no shortage of secrets to choose from (even if some secrets might be duplicated). It wasn't that long ago when we were having 6-secret days.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This, gooddamn. There is absolutely no need to make this difficult.

Thanks, nonny!

I've explained why this solution isn't as easy as people seem to think, but here goes again..

(Anonymous) 2020-06-12 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've explained why this solution isn't as easy as people seem to think, but here goes again... Sometimes, these threads are started by people who aren't secret makers. They might have a secret they want made and they know there are others in the same boat, and that's fine.

As someone else has pointed out, this solution also doesn't work very well because starting a comment secret thread can really blow up. Have you seen them? Sometimes there are dozens of secrets. You don't know how many comments there will be, and it's a potentially large commitment of time that not everyone can/will put in to making secrets.

I've been making secrets for this community for years now and let me gently suggest that:

1) Maybe duplicates aren't really that serious of a problem? Comment secrets have been a thing for ages, and duplicates don't pop up very often.

2) Maybe allow the people doing the work of secret making to decide how they want to handle it instead of trying to dictate to them how they should handle it?

If case feels this is a problem that needs addressing, I'm sure he's more than capable of addressing it himself. I'm certainly open and willing to listen to any suggestions case has. So far, all the suggestions I've seen are impractical for one reason or another.

Comment secrets have been a thing for ages, and duplicates don't pop up very often.

Because Case is doing the work to filter them all out, not because there aren't a lot of them being submitted.

If case feels this is a problem that needs addressing, I'm sure he's more than capable of addressing it himself.

I agree we should've let Case address it if he wanted to. That said, the people rushing in are probably just concerned for Case, because often mods feel obligated to take on whatever extra work there is in order to keep things running smoothly.

Has case actually said that there have been a lot of duplicate secrets*? I missed it, if so. If it would make things easier for case, I'd be all in favor of not bothering to filter out the duplicates. Most people who've voiced an opinion on the matter agree, citing that it's to see the different designs. To me, this seems like the easiest solution all round.

* To clarify, NOT secrets accidentally submitted more than once but actual different submissions.
