Huh. I like most of the Young Wizards books (more than the more frequently called out for being Christian propaganda Narnia books) but I don’t equate tolerating bullying with martyrdom at all. And the books don’t seem to either. They do kind of glorify self-sacrifice in service to a greater good, but preserving life and slowing the heat death of the universe =/= close enough to Christianity to make me roll my eyes. But then, I didn’t grow up Christian, so I don’t have a lot of the automatic dislike for anything that reminds me of Christianity that kids who were made miserable by their Christian upbringing do.

I have heard some kids who grew up in Christian households are basically encouraged to tolerate abuse and bullying because it will make them better people or more like Jesus or just because their families refuse to believe that their behavior towards their kids is abusive because they’re good Christians, so if that’s what happened to you, OP, I’m sorry.

I also first read the Young Wizards books in my late teens, so I was older than the target audience. Maybe that made a difference to my enjoyment? I still love the second book with the naturally evolved sentient computer planet.

I was bullied and my parents VERY strongly discouraged me from fighting back in any way because jesus. And now they don't understand why I'm not religious.

My parents didn't, but the faculty and staff at my school did. My parents were missionaries, and I was told that if I told them about what was happening to me or tried to fight back in any way, I would be hurting Jesus' mission by affecting my parents work. My parents have since made clear that this was nonsense and my sister and I were absolutely their first priority and if they'd known they would have found a way to pay for the more expensive school for me or even left the field. But I didn't know that at the time. I bought into the lie I was being told.

I can't believe any adult would let something like that happen. I'm a high school teacher so I know how complicated it is for the faculty and the parents to deal with something as potentially damaging as bullying, but still. I can understand - it's not the right word but I hope you get what I mean - teenagers bullying because they are stupid kids and I hope they will grow out of it (it happened once with one of my kids!), but we are supposed to protect the kids and teach them to be decent human beings, not show them how fucked up the whole system is.

Anyway, I do feel for you and I am very sorry to hear about your experience. I just wanted to let you know.

I'm with you on teenage bullying vs. adult bullying. I've experienced both, and to me bullying by authority figures that I'm supposed to trust and who are supposed to protect me was absolutely the worst of what I experienced and what contributed the most to my PTSD.

Thanks. I've worked through a lot of it with time, therapy, meds, and people who do care about me.

I know I'm a bit late, but I'm glad you're doing better.

Also, I don't recommend private religious schools for anyone. Even ones that aren't as bad as the one I went to. Too insular, and the legal protections simply aren't there. They can get away with things that at least with a public school you have a chance of bringing them to court and getting some legal protection.

Yes, I agree with you, I liked the Young Wizards books and did not like Narnia. I was not raised Christian and I got the Christian-ish aspects of the book but did not find them too Christian. And I definitely don't think they encourage just taking bullying!
