Obvious Realizations

(Anonymous) 2020-06-24 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Reddit told me some people step into the shower before turning the water on; like let the icy pipe settlings hit them and just suffer until it warms up, never realizing you could just wait until the water was a good temperature before stepping in.

Have you ever realized something you always did was, in retrospect, obviously not the best way to do it?

I mean... I just stand at the far end of the tub and out of range of the water until it's the right temp?

I thought this was what everyone did...

Do you have a really long tub or does your shower only spray straight down?

It's movable. I point it down, and then move it when it's warmed up after a second.

Why bother getting in the tub at all until it's the right temp if you're not going to stand under it while it's still cold?

In the Philippines most places don't have automatic hot water. They have individual heaters for each shower. So you have to actually get into the shower to turn on the heater, since it is usually on the far side and way up high.

But yes, back here in the US, I've always waited until the water is where I want it to be. I'm usually particular about temperature. Warm but not too hot. Unless I'm in the mood for a cold shower.

I know full well that I could just wait until the water warms up, but that first chilly blast of water is perfect for knocking out the last of my grogginess.

Until I was nineteen I undid my bra with two hands and often had to spin it around to the front to undo it. Then a friend of mind was like, "You use two hands to undo your bra? Dude, just use one." So I tried doing it with just one hand and discovered it was actually way easier that way.

I just use jog bras so I just pull them over my head.

I've found that if I stay outside while letting the water warm up, I let it go much longer, thereby wasting a lot of water, so I don't do that. But I also don't generally stand under it (though there are times - the high today here was 110°F), just aim it at the shower wall until it warms sufficiently.

I'm with you on this one. I would switch to drinking luke warm coffee before I'd switch to getting in the shower before it's warmed up. *shivers*

For your example (and mentioned above) - if you grew up/end up where you have to minimize your time in the shower due to cost or you’re sharing with a lot of other people, then it makes some sense! Just get wet enough to lather at the start, then move the shower head or yourself until it’s warm enough to immerse fully.

For the question - Everyday, probably! But for things I’ve done something about, I’ve recently realized how amazing a dedicated spoon/spatula/whatever rest for cooking is. What? You mean I don’t have to awkwardly balance a dripping spatula on the side of the pan or perch it on a too-small handle while forgetting it’s not entirely heat resistant or use up paper towels or dishes wantonly or wander around clutching it?

Nothing really face-palm-y, but I spent all of my teens and part of my 20s thinking I had straight hair that was frizzy before realizing I had curly/wavy hair and I should approach it as such. Changed my life.

along similar lines, I'm not even going to tell you how long it took me to figure out "clarifying" and "volumizing" meant shampoo for oily hair.
