+1 That's literally one of the major themes of the story.

Sort of, because it's only addressed in like... the main characters? The issue is totally handwaved for everyone else.

How is it handwaved if everyone else IS confined or caught up by societal rules/expectations? There had to be a norm for the main characters to stand against, right?

Because the whole "I'm confined/caught up by societal rules/expectations" moment is really brushed over for the rest of the characters. There's very little conflict, it just... happens and people say very little one way or the other. Even if you're upholding the norm, that's something that's usually addressed. Lan Qiren does so directly when he reminds Lan Wanji about the rules of Gusu Lan. But most characters don't even mention it.

da

I agree that it would be better if the characters addressed it clearly, so that putting the clans/politics over everything was more of a conscious choice.

We did have a moment like that for Lan Xichen, though. Remember that scene where Jin Zixun forced alcohol on Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji? Lan Xichen put politics and avoiding a confrontation over following ethical rules he believed in and drank it. Lan Wangji refused and was not trying to cause a scene but definitely wasn't trying to defuse the situation either, until Wei Wuxian drank the alcohol for him.

Sure, it does not give deep insight in Lan Xichen's motivations, but it is a nice bit of characterisation that sets up the whole dynamic well, doesn't it?
